Maine Potato Blossom Festival events bring out athletes of all ages

Swim Meet

Despite a chilly start to the morning it was into the pool at the Maine Potato Blossom Festival on July 13 for the annual swim meet.

Swimmers, up to age 18, from Fort Fairfield, Caribou and Presque Isle participated.

Caribou was one of three recreation swim teams to take part in the annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival Swim Meet.

The Presque Isle Recreation Department team came in first with 401 points, Fort Fairfield was second with 210 points and Caribou third with 34 points.

High point scorers in individual categories are as follows: 8 and under girls, Rhylee Kinney, 28 points; 8 and under boys, Chase Coiley, 28 points; 9- and 10-year-old girls, Madelyn Wing, 26 points; 9- and 10-year-old boys, Joshua Watson, 28 points; 11- and 12-year-old girls, Taylor Churchill, 19 points; 11- and 12-year-old boys, Joshua Pimentel, 28 points; 13- and 14-year-old girls, Alexis Coiley, 26 points; 13- and 14-year-old boys, Nate DeWitt, 28 points; 15- to 18-year-old girls, Erica Hemphill, 28 points; and 15- to 18-year-old boys, Isaac Estey, 28 points.

Spud Cycle Classic

More than 25 bicyclists tackled hot and humid conditions on Sunday, July 17 to take part in the annual Spud Cycle Classic race during the Maine Potato Blossom Festival.

37-year-old Thad LaVallee of Boston completed the 25-mild course one second ahead of 21-year-old Brendan McLaughlin of Fort Fairfield. LaVallee’s winning time was 1:02:32.

The top female finisher was 50 year-old Frances Prest of Presque Isle in 1:26:47.

Other age division winners included 13-year-old Megan Towle of Fort Fairfield, 17-year old Kylie Plourde of Fort Fairfield, 38-year old Steve Connor of Dedham, 49-year-old Jim Wohlsemth of Carmel, 52-year old Verla Brooks of Lisbon, 52-year old Von Perry of Easton and 66-year old Marcel Bastide of Orrington.

3 on 3 Basketball

Ten teams took to the court for the annual 3 on 3 hoop tournament at the Maine Potato Blossom Festival in Fort Fairfield on Tuesday, July 12.

A team from Presque Isle comprised of Ryan Lamoreau, Oliver Zubrick, Andrew Legasse, Alex Tuttle and Travis Dyer had to come out of the loser bracket to claim the title. Second place went to the Fort  Fairfield team of Jay Williams, Travis Noyes, Brandon Clark and Mike McLellan.
