Youths give back to their community

Looking for a rewarding family activity this summer? Take a page from the Long kids’ book on giving back to the community. In early June, Jacob, Jasmine and Scott Long Jr. collected almost $60 worth of returnable bottles on their walks about town with their dad, Scott Sr. While that amount of money would buy toys, a video game or movies that most kids would enjoy, the family decided to give back to the community and donated it to a local thrift store The Cubby, but that’s not the full extent of their community spirit.

Eleven-year-old Scott Jr., 7-year-old Jasmine and 9-year-old Jacob Long were all old enough earlier this summer to realize that volunteering is its own reward.

Like many Aroostook residents, the Longs gathered fiddleheads this spring; picking more than they needed, the youths and their father distributed the popular product among residents of low-income housing in Caribou.
