During a regular meeting of the Caribou City Council held Monday evening, councilors voted to authorize amendments to the 2011 municipal budget in the net reduction amount of $75,752 prior to tax commitment. The amount includes a $54,000 reduction in the anticipated $966,000 state revenue sharing.
Referencing the anticipated state revenue sharing amount, Caribou City Manager Steven Buck informed the council that “Not so long ago, this amount was $1.6 million. This is a big hit to our budget, it’s really nasty.”
With the budget amendments approved, the council considered setting the mil rate for the commitment of the 2011 property taxes. Following discussion, the mil rate was voted to be set at 26.1 mils; a two-mil increase from last year.
As approved by the council, the date for the 2011 property taxes to be committed to the tax collector will be July 1 with that same date being recommended as the established date that the property taxes will be due and payable.
The established date for interest to begin accruing on any delinquent 2011 property taxes is Thursday, Oct. 6, with a rate of interest to be charged on delinquent taxes set at 7 percent.
The council also set a rate of interest at 3 percent for the overpayment and or abatement of property taxes for 2011.
