Caribou City Manager Steven Buck converses with construction workers at the site of the ‘Bridge in a Backpack,” on the phase I section of the Caribou Connector, which will connect Routes 1 and 161. The bridge. the largest arch bridge of its type to be built in the state to date, has a span of 54 feet. One of the biggest attractions of the Bridge in a Backpack, is the 22 carbon tubes that create the arch. These tubes, which are only one-quarter-inch-thick will be filled with self-consolidating concrete that will be funneled into each of the tubes, spreading to an estimated 23 inches in width. For more photos and information pertaining to the unique bridge please see an upcoming edition of the Aroostook Republican.
