PVC all-stars selected
The Penobscot Valley Conference announced its all-conference teams in track and field, tennis, baseball and softball recently, and Presque Isle and Caribou are well represented on the elite squads.
Making the large school (Class A and B) girls’ first team for track and field was Caribou’s Emily Soderberg in the 1,600-meter race walk. Earning spots on the boys’ first team were Caribou’s Christian Sleeper in the 1,600-meter run and D. J. Flynn, also of the Vikings, in the 1,600-meter race walk. Caribou athletes were prevalent on the second team. Olivia Sleeper made it for the 400-meter dash, Paige Small for the 1,600-meter race walk, Sarae Sager for the 100-meter high hurdles, Morgan Swan for the triple jump and the discus and Sam Murchison for the discus. Also recognized was the 4×800-meter relay team of Kendra Stephens, Mackenzie Belyea, Dayna Michaud and Katie Plourde. Vikings on the boys’ second team were Josh Kovach and Jake Michaud in the 1,600-meter race walk and Lance Jandreau in the pole vault. Stephen Goulet of Presque Isle was a second-teamer in the discus.
Other first-team selections for girls were Teal Jackson of Brewer in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, Kelsey Maxim of Old Town in the 800-meter run, Dacie Manion of Old Town in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run, Grace MacLean of Bangor in the 100-meter high hurdles, Denae Johnson of Bangor in the 300-meter low hurdles and the long jump, Grace MacLean of Bangor in the high jump, Chelsey Curran of MDI in the pole vault, Kayla Brooks of Old Town in the triple jump, Katie Deshane of Old Town in the shot put, Julia Snyder of Hampden in the discus and Haley Prygrocki of Old Town in the javelin. Bangor’s 4×100-meter relay team, Hampden’s 4×400-meter relay team and Mount Desert Island’s 4×800-meter relay team also made the first team.
Named to the boys’ first team were Chrisshawn Fluker of Ellsworth in the 100-meter dash, Jacob St. Peter of Old Town in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes, Nicholas Byers of Hermon in the 800-meter run, Dan Curts of Ellsworth in the 3,200-meter run, Tristan Wortman of Brewer in the 110-meter high hurdles and the pole vault, Jake Leithiser of Old Town in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, the high jump and the long jump; Ray Bessette of Brewer in the triple jump, Tyler Grindle of Bangor in the shot put, Ryan Lynde of MDI in the discus and Jared Winchenbach of Old Town in the javelin. Ellsworth’s 4×100-meter relay team, Brewer’s 4×400-meter relay team and Bangor’s 4×800-meter relay team were all first-team selections.
In tennis, Caribou’s Jenna Selander was named Class B player of the year, while her coach, John Habeeb, gained coach of the year honors. Selander was named to the Class B girls’ first team, while the doubles team of Katie Keaton and Ashley Richards also was a first-team selection. Also on the first team for singles were Mea Clark of MDI and Holly Wadman of Ellsworth. Selected to the first team for doubles were Caitlin Maloney and Rachel Ball of Ellsworth. The Wildcats’ Caleb Mathers made the Class B boys’ first team as did the doubles combination of Osman Castro and Brock Cassidy. Making the second team was singles player Connor Shaw of Presque Isle as well as the doubles team of Mike Picard and Andrew Legassie. Other first-team choices were, for singles, Bobtom Flynn of John Bapst and Tyler Small of Ellsworth; and in doubles, Brandan Albee and Adam Toothaker of Ellsworth. Brian Higgins was named coach of the year and Flynn was the player of the year.
For Class B baseball, Tyler Seeley of the Wildcats was named to the second team as an outfielder, while teammate Wilder York was also selected to the second team as a utility player. Stephen St. Peter of the Vikings also made the second team as an outfielder. Members of the PVC first team are player of the year Max Andrews of John Bapst as the first baseman, Jordan Carter of Ellsworth as catcher, Reid McGinley of Hermon as the second baseman, Casey Estes of Old Town as the shortstop, Chris Hammond of John Bapst as the third baseman, Cody Cross of Old Town, Caleb MacDonald of MDI and Tyler Fournier of Hermon as outfielders, Evan Eldridge of Bucksport and Cote Card of Ellsworth as utility players and Thomas Sawyer of Ellsworth, Cody Veilleux of Hermon and Tyler French of Bucksport as pitchers. Veilleux was named pitcher of the year and Hermon coach Doug McGinley was the coach of the year.
The Class B softball coach of the year is Ryan Deprey of Caribou. Jamie Martin of the Vikings earned a berth on the first team as an outfielder, while Viking teammate Anesha Hersey was selected as a second team shortstop and Jordyn Doucette, also of the Vikes, was a second team third baseman. Caribou’s Emily Staples also was a second team choice as a pitcher. Making the first team were Ellsworth’s Cristin Wright as catcher, Shannon Graves of Hermon as first baseman, Sadie Wright of Bucksport at second base, Shelby Redman of Bucksport at shortstop, Ashley Smith of Ellsworth at third base, Ashley Thayer of Hermon and Meagan Cousins of Old Town as outfielders, Taylor Hawkins of Mattanawcook as designated hitter, Molly Joyce of John Bapst as utility player and Tayla Trask of Mattanwcook, Abby Yeo of Bucksport and Debbie Colpitts of Hermon as pitchers. Trask was the choice as pitcher of the year and Sadie Wright was the player of the year.
