To the editor:
Did you know there was a vote on June 14th that affects all the taxpayers in Caribou? Oh, you didn’t see it posted in the library? Well, maybe you didn’t see it on our electronic sign; it was one of the 18 messages there! Maybe you missed the “snippet” in the Aroostook Republican — I missed it.
Don’t feel bad; only 159 people voted in this election. Just the way the Superintendent of Schools wanted it! Minimal advertising — minimal resistance to RSU 39’s pay hike of 2 percent, coming out of the taxpayers pocket again.
I don’t want to downplay the hard work or dedication of our teachers; they do a fine job. In these tough economic times, most of us are feeling the strains on our budgets. I think RSU 39’s timing on this vote was misguided.
What’s next? Is the City Council going to go into “executive session” and vote themselves tax exempt? They might as well. We, the taxpayers, must be blind, or apathetic or “just plain stupid.”
Isn’t a democratic society a wonderful thing?
