TAMC hosts Survivor Camp

PRESQUE ISLE — Survivor Aroostook Health Care Career Exploration Camp returns in 2011 with a new group of campers who may become our area’s future health-care providers and leaders.

The purpose of the camp is to introduce students from all over Aroostook County to a wide range of health-care careers in a fun, hands-on, supportive environment. The camp is open to students who are entering their first year of high school.

The event is once again taking place at the Northern Maine Community College campus on June 20-23.

Campers divide into tribes and participate in competitions throughout the week, just like on the television show “Survivor.” Most of the competitions are related to health care, and by the end of the week one tribe emerges as the winner.

The camp has been recognized in national magazines for its unique approach to tackling health-care staffing shortages. Events include: Wheelchair Race and Wheelchair Basketball Demo — the Maine Wheelers Wheelchair Basketball Team will show campers that with hard work and dedication, many of the obstacles people with disabilities face can be overcome; and Exploration Stations — students participate in fun, hands-on activities, from putting real casts on each other to stitching steak, with the campers having lots of fun while learning about several different health-care careers.
