Perception of Aroostook donates software

PRESQUE ISLE — Northern Maine Community College students enrolled in the wind power technology program will benefit from a software donation to go along with a wind generator purchased by the college earlier this year from Perception of Aroostook.

The software will be used along with a Sky Stream 3.7 — a personal wind generator purchased for use by students in the wind power technology program and other trade and technical occupations department programs utilizing the new Northern Maine Center for Excellence in Alternative Energy Training and Education.

The Sky Stream 3.7 allows students to have a more hands-on lab experience in the area of residential wind energy.

It is designed to produce energy in low wind speeds.

In an effort to enhance students’ learning and ensure they gain all possible knowledge from the wind generator, Leo Freeman, owner of Perception of Aroostook, decided to donate the Skyview 2.0 software that works along with the Sky Stream unit.

“I decided to donate the Skyview software to help NMCC expand the program,” said Freeman. “Students will be able to track wind speeds and see how the unit works internally. The software will allow the students to learn all they can from the Sky Stream.”

Wayne Kilcollins, instructor of the wind power technology program, welcomed Freeman into his class recently to present the donation to the students who will use the technology.

“The donated Skyview 2.0 software will serve as a great addition to the classroom,” said Kilcollins. “The software communicates with the Sky Stream 3.7 wind turbine lab model we have at the alternative energy center. It will enable a laptop or desktop computer to access and store production data from the unit.”
