On Tuesday, June 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Caribou Performing Arts Center, the Charter Commission will hold a public hearing, at which time the revised charter, which includes a new budget procedure, replacement of certain language, updates regarding state law references, among other changes/amendments will be proposed to the citizens of Caribou.
At a recent city council meeting, Steve Buck, city manager, informed the council and those in attendance that the commission was ready to present the proposed revised charter and commented that the group had done an outstanding job on this very in-depth project.
There will be time allotted for questions and discussion following the presentation by the commission.
On Dec. 15, 2010, elected and appointed members of the Caribou Charter Commission held a public hearing at the Performing Arts Center, at which time they encouraged community members to address the panel with their thoughts, concerns and ideas regarding changes in the city’s charter.
Some of the main avenues of concern and suggestions brought to the panel included the re-vamping of the budget process, the possibility of the city being separated into wards and to address the responsibilities of the city council. Through the year the charter commission has met a total of eight times and according to Patricia Collins, chairwoman, the panel has completed its work on the document
Following legal review on a finalized document the revision will be decided upon by voters on Nov. 8.
