PRESQUE ISLE — Police are investigating a rash of burglaries that occurred throughout the city over the holiday weekend.
The Presque Isle Police Department began receiving calls early Sunday morning, May 29, reporting vehicles had been burglarized at various locations in town, including residences and at least one business.
Sgt. Eric Erickson was assigned to investigate, with the assistance of Officer Kevin Schumacher and the department’s tracking K-9, Hunter.
Upon investigation, Erickson determined that vehicles were entered at Star City IGA, as well as those at homes on the following streets: Yale, Maple, Barton, Pine and Sherwin. Various items were reported taken, including money, a surveying prism, electronic equipment and several music CDs. Schumacher and Hunter began tracking from Yale Street and made their way across town, ending across the Presque Isle Stream at a location north of Page’s Variety.
Police have received reports of at least a dozen vehicles being entered over the weekend. Neighbors in the area of the thefts reported hearing noises in the night.
A man also indicated to police that he’d seen several teenagers “poking around the area” around midnight.
None of the vehicles were locked at the time of the thefts. Police urge everyone to lock their vehicles when parked, as a deterrent to thieves, and secure valuables in a glove box or trunk rather than in plain sight.
Anyone with information about these burglaries is asked to contact the PIPD at 764-4476.
