LIMESTONE/CASWELL — It’s true that giving comes from the heart, but a Caswell 5-year-old recently decided to use her head as well.

Holding over 10 inches of hair for Locks of Love, Abagayle Mulherin had a smile to match her brand new hairstyle, cut by Danielle Paradis of Talk of the Town in Limestone.

Pre-K student at the Dawn F. Barnes Elementary school Abagayle Mulherin used to have long hair cascading down her back until one day, she saw some young children while watching television who had lost their hair while battling childhood cancer. She asked her mom and grandparents if she could give those children some of her hair.

Mother Meagan Mulherin and her parents, Roz and Alan Mulherin, have been teaching Abbie the value of helping other and sharing with those less fortunate for about a year, and the 5-year-old continues to show that she’s heeding their lessons.

Abbie immediately wanted to contribute her long hair to the Locks of Love program so that a child who’d lost their hair battling cancer could have hair of their own; her parents checked into the program and booked an appointment with a stylist to make certain that Abbie’s hair was long enough to donate.

Stylist Danielle Paradis of Talk of the Town Salon in Limestone gathered Abbie’s long hair into a ponytail over 10 inches long and made the charitable cut, styling Abbie a new chin-length coif in the process. Making certain the hair was properly wrapped for shipping, the 5-year-old excitedly shipped the ponytail off to Locks of Love.

“Though she will probably never know who she helped by donating her hair, Abbie feels very good about getting her hair cut and helping a kid with cancer who is now wearing her hair because they don’t have any of their own,” her grandmother Roz said.
