Fort Kent — One hundred ninety-five students received degrees at the 129th commencement exercises at the University of Maine at Fort Kent on May 7. University President Wilson G. Hess presided over the ceremony that conferred 177 bachelor degrees and 18 associate degrees.

President Hess was formally invested as UMFK’s 10th president in a brief ceremony officiated by Norman Fournier, UMFK Class of 1967, and vice-chair of the University of Maine System Board of Trustees.

Sixteen area professional educators received master of science in education degrees, conferred by the University of Southern Maine.

In addition to awarding the diplomas to the Class of 2011, Hess conferred Douglas G. Brinkley with an honorary doctorate of humane letters.

Anthony M. Drouin, senior class representative, addressed his fellow graduates. Drouin is from Turner and graduated with a bachelor of science in rural public safety administration.

Also at the commencement ceremony, Bernard Paradis of Fort Kent was honored with the University’s Distinguished Service Award.

Local graduates include:

• Eagle Lake — John Anthony Forino, bachelor of science in biology, Thomas M. Pelletier, bachelor of science in public safety administration, Amy T. Ricciardi, bachelor of science in nursing, and Kristin M. Violette, bachelor of science in behavioral science;

• Easton — Mack Perry, bachelor of science in nursing / nursing major accelerated;

• Fort Fairfield — Melissa Clark, bachelor of science in computer applications, Steven Parady, bachelor of science in nursing, and Laura Lee Tardif, bachelor of science in public safety administration;

• Mapleton — Megan Theresa Sturgeon, bachelor of science in behavioral science;

• Perham — Sylvia Kay Garey, bachelor of science in nursing, and Kathleen D. Michaud, bachelor of science in nursing;

• Presque Isle — David R. Dionne, bachelor of university studies, Becky Lynn Ford, bachelor of science in nursing, Ian James Robertson, bachelor of science in electronic commerce, and Janice E. Scott, bachelor of science in nursing; and

• Winterville Plantation — Kathrine A. Long-Lozier, bachelor of science in nursing.
