Pre-walk party planned

Special to the Star-Herald

What a day the Central Aroostook Humane Society had on Saturday.

We participated in the Caribou City Wide Yard Sale and it was a very successful day. Morgan Anderson gave us a lovely garage in which to have our items displayed and we got the chance to network and meet many wonderful people and raise money to help the animals. Many lovely “gently” used items were donated to help us raise this money, so we felt supported all the way around. Expect to see much more of the Central Aroostook Humane Society Caribou; we really had an awesome time.

Join us for a Kick-Off Party on Thursday, June 2, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to celebrate the upcoming Paws for the Cause Walk. Our auxiliary group, the Friends of Central Aroostook Humane Society, is hosting this fun event at Freddy P’s in downtown Presque Isle. It’s a great chance to learn more about the upcoming fund-raising walk while having a good time for a good cause.

Come on out and enjoy appetizers and a chance at a unique door prize. Also, check out the cool prizes we’ll be giving away at the walk for those who raise the most money or try your luck with a 50/50 raffle. Tickets will be $10 at the door, and proceeds will benefit the dogs and cats at the humane society.

We hope this party will help generate a lot of excitement for the Paws for the Cause Walk. This is an annual shelter fundraiser, and it’s scheduled for June 18, rain or shine. Walk participants either collect pledges or register for $5 the day of the event. Pledge sheets will be available at the Kick-Off Party or at the shelter.

Fort Kent Animal Hospital reminds us: The most common time of year for leptospirosis infections to occur is in the spring and summer, especially during wet weather. Since the bacteria can live in contaminated water, both you and your pets are at risk. We can vaccinate your dogs, but there is no vaccine for people. Be careful out there! What is leptospirosis? It is a disease caused by infection with bacteria of the genus Leptospira that affects humans as well as other mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles. Be sure your dog is vaccinated.

Have you become a fan of CAHS on Facebook yet? Well what are you waiting for? It is a great way for us to reach out to the public. We will be listing all of our fundraisers and shelter news on Facebook as well as on our website. You can download our flier for the Paws for the Cause Walk as well as a pledge sheet. Share pictures of your pet that you adopted from the shelter or a story; all the happy-ending stories keep us going.

Did you know that there is no limitation on how long we keep cats or dogs at the Central Aroostook Humane Society? Many people think that we only keep animals for a certain amount of time and then put them to sleep; that is definitely not the case. We keep animals as long as their temperament is good and they are healthy. The Central Aroostook Humane Society is a place of hope — hope for a new life, a new beginning for many animals and their new families.

Father’s Day is fast approaching, so think about buying a chance on a fish finder for Dad and help us raise funds.

If you are looking for a friend for life, please visit the shelter often. We are located at 26 Cross St., Presque Isle, or you can give us a call at 764-3441. The Humane Society is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday.

Please have your pets spayed and neutered.
