100 Years Ago-May 24, 1911

    Houlton — The selectmen adopted a very efficient method of settling the dust on the streets around town by having the sprinkler go over the principal streets late in the evening.
    Membership — Call at Frank Dunn’s furniture store, pay him one dollar and be enrolled as a member of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce.
    Memorial — Through the influence of Hon. F.A. Peabody, a cannon, one of the regular field pieces has been secured and will be placed in the Public Park as a permanent ornament.

    Bus service — A new bus service inaugurated by the Canadian Pacific Railroad between Houlton and Woodstock, supplanting the regular train service went into effect recently with three trips daily.
    State barracks — Capt. Wilbur H. Towle of the State Highway Police was in Houlton on his tour of inspection of this section to determine a site for the barracks which will be erected somewhere in the new fifth police district.
    Rotary — An endorsement of this newspaper’s efforts to secure better highways leading into Aroostook County was given at the regular Houlton Rotary Club meeting. It was generally agreed that this section of Maine is not receiving the attention to which it is entitled in the matter of highways.

    WHOU — The local radio station will increase its power four fold, broadcasting with 1,000 watts of power during daylight hours.
    Memorial services — For the first time in nearly a century, there will not be the traditional Memorial Day service in Houlton due to a lack of funds.
    Island Falls — Fishermen are reporting catching salmon at Pleasant Lake.
    Monticello — Terry Wade was week-end guest of Rodney Foster, while Angela Foster was a guest of Miss Marie Jewell at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Al Jewell.
    Newsworthy — The first adhesive U.S. postage stamp was issued May 17, 1847.
    New Limerick — Guests on Mother’s Day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Shaw were their son, Airman 2nd Class Wayne Shaw stationed at Kansas City, Mo., their daughter, Chelvedene of Hartford, Conn., Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Newman of Monticello and Fred Donahue of Houlton.

    Hawaii — Melissa Drouin, a 15-year-old sophomore at Hodgdon High School and the daughter of Ray and Sheila Drouin, has earned an all-expense paid trip to Hawaii as a result of being named Miss Northern New England American Coed at the annual state pageant.

bs-fromfiles86-pt-21RETIREES — Five members of the SAD 29 faculty were honored with a dinner at the Atrium by the SAD 29 Teachers Association. They were Barbara Rogers, Emily Scott, Donald Duplessis and Ralph Prince. Eugene Jackins is also retiring, but not pictured.

    Tennis — Mary Dunn and Matt Perry qualified for the State girls and boys tennis tournament. They will compete against 31 other players from Maine in Waterville and Augusta.
    AAUW — The Houlton branch of AAUW hosted the 1986 spring convention of the Maine Division of the American Association of University Women. More than 80 members attended.
    GOP candidate — U.S. Congressman John McKernan, Republican candidate for Governor visited Houlton as a guest of State Representative Gennette Ingraham who hosted a coffee in his honor. Also attending was Margaret Ludwig who is running for the State Senate.
