Southside School teams up with Rotary to clean neighborhoods

Students from the Southside After-school Program and their parents teamed up with local Rotarians for a “Spring Spruce Up” on May 14.
With guidance from Southside After-school Program Coordinator Suzanne Lawler, the group hit the streets of Houlton to pick up trash and other debris visible after the spring snowmelt.
“We started at the Wesleyan Church parking lot, split up in groups, and scoured neighborhood streets looking for any rubbish we could put in our garbage bags,” Lawler explained.

In all, the group collected over 15 bags of debris.
Scott Dionne, Houlton Rotary vice president believes “raising money for causes is crucial to fulfilling the service goals of Rotary, but getting out in our neighborhoods and giving immediate action to community service is key to fostering excitement in youth and ensuring we have a future generation who are committed to serving others.”
Both groups hope to carry out the project again next year.
