Spring is here and the many who have braved our winter and yearned to hit a golf ball can take the clubs out of the closet.
Houlton Community Golf Course will open this weekend and weather permitting, carts can be used. The greens are in the best shape in years thanks to last year’s late work.
The Board of Directors are David Grant, chairman; Jerry York, vice chairman; Martha Fasulo, secretary; Janice Kelley, treasurer and Steve Nelson, clerk.
Also, Don Collins, greens committee chairman; Andrew Peabody, tournament chairman; York, long-range planning chairman; Linda Holmes, handicap chairman; Grant, youth committee chairman, along with Dan Peabody and Fasulo serving as house and aesthetic committee.
Aesthetic means that all you guys must dress appropriately and the ladies use their usual good taste.
Other board members are Fred Putnam, Tony Marino and Greg Palmer.
Ladies’ League officers include: Pam Mailman, president; Marion Collins, vice president; Ethel Mersereau, secretary; Mary Grant, treasurer and Harriet Gray, play committee chair.
Ladies opening banquet is Tuesday, May 24 at the Horn of Plenty. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Call to reserve your spot by Thursday, May 19 at 532-2662 or 532-7549. All lady golfers or potential golfers are invited.
Seasonal team play begins June 7. This is a great opportunity for ladies who have never played to ask any questions they may have and enjoy the camaraderie of golfers.
Zach Goodwin has been hired as manager, with his clubhouse and pro shop aides Ben Goodwin, Aaron Peabody, Paul Madigan, Mailman and Jenn Carr.
Course superintendent Bob Gray has been retained to care for the greens and fairways. He has a fine reputation so we look forward to a well-tailored course.
There will be many stories from the Houlton Community Golf Course in the coming months, and I will try to keep you up-to-date each week. And, remember, the oft repeated Golfers’ Prayer: “Give me strength to shoot a score so low, that even I, when telling of it afterward may never need to lie.”
