100 Years Ago: May 27. 1911
• Waldo Lowney is building a cold storage in connection with his ice house, enabling him to cut ice the right size in the afternoon, ready for delivery the next day — thus saving several hours’ work in the early morning.
• Potatoes are $1.25 per barrel with but few coming in.
• Word was received Friday that the treasury department of the government had decided to purchase the Records lot, so called, on Sweden Street as the site for the new federal post office building. Surveys were made Saturday by G.M. Hardison and the necessary papers will be forwarded to Washington at once.
• Clarence Mockler, who has been running between Fort Fairfield and Aroostook Junction this winter, is once more running out of Caribou. Mrs. Mockler is once more back at her home here also.
• E.G. Greenlaw has sold his farm on the Back Caribou Road to E.E. Welts and on Wednesday of this week moved his family to Presque Isle.
75 Years Ago: April 23, 1936
• Reginald Gagne of Caribou was the winner of the amateur show held in the New Sweden Town Hall Tuesday evening. His rendition of vocal solos and yodeling, accompanying himself on the guitar, won the unanimous approval of the audience.
• There has been a lot of moving going on in Green Ridge. Sam Theriault has moved from the ridge to the Washburn Road; John Currie has moved into the Theriault house; James Shaw has moved into the Currie house and Llyle Rasmusen has moved into the Walter Hansen house.
• F.S. Tibbetts has sold and delivered new Chevrolet cars to Edward J. Pangburn, Miss Katherine Ames, Thomas Albair, Clovis Parent, Clifford McIntire, Archie Larson, Malcolm McGrath, Ben Raymond and Frank Carlson. New trucks have been delivered to Edward Gahagan, Colby W. Buzzell, Frank Thomas, Charles Kimball and a special panel job to Dan Daniels.
• The committee selected at the town meeting to prepare plans on the proposed municipal building have had several sessions this week with the architect, John LeVasseur of Presque Isle. The committee met Wednesday afternoon and approved the sketch. The building will be somewhat larger than was originally planned and will have a frontage of 105 feet on High Street. The west end will contain the fire station on the first floor, opening onto High Street and this will be 45 feet of frontage. Over the fire station will be the municipal offices and apartment for the engine driver’s family. The basement of this section will be used for the police station and storage of town road equipment.
50 Years Ago: April 27, 1961
• Airman Brian Rogers who has just graduated from the technical training course for aircraft and missile maintenance at Amarillo Air Force Base in Texas, is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Rogers for two weeks. He has been assign to Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma, following his leave.
• PFC Walter L. Greenier II, has completed special training at Fort Manmouth, New Jersey, and is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Walter Greenier. He is being reassigned to Ft. Gordon, Georgia.
• Marine Cpl. Richard H. Conley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur G. Conley of Caribou is serving with Marine Aircraft Group 16, at the Marine Corps Air Facility, Futema, Okinawa.
• Mrs. John McKinnon and son Edward, returned home Sunday after spending a few days at Poland with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Nelson.
• Rumors of a new grocery supermarket in Caribou were virtually confirmed when it was reported a that a large parcel of land on the Access Road had been acquired by Millikin-Tomlinson Co., Portland. This company handles IGA products and lines.
