Evangelical Covenant Church announces services

Pastor T. Daniel Clayborne has announced that the Evangelical Covenant Church of New Sweden will hold a Communion and Tenebrae service on Thursday April, 21, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the church located at 40 Westmanland Road in New Sweden.

Pastor Clayborne stated, “According to the Covenant Book of Worship, (Covenant publications 2003) the service of Tenebrae, or “shadows,” dates back to the eighth century and focuses on the commemoration of the passion of Jesus. The most significant aspect of this service is the gradual extinguishing of the lights and candles in the sanctuary, symbolizing the flight of the apostles and the darkness and disturbance that accompanied the passion. The candles represent the apostles and all followers of Christ, with a larger candle representing Christ.”

“The high point of the service is reached when the Christ candle is removed from the room and a period of silence, symbolizing his three days in the tomb, is observed. The light is returned to the room foreshadowing the resurrection,” he also cited.

The church will also be hosting a breakfast prior to the Easter morning worship service. The breakfast begins at  9:30 a.m. and worship follows at 11 a.m.

Everyone is invited to attend these services.
