To the editor:
When I first heard the news that the beautiful historical mural in the capital was going to be removed, I was adamant that it should stay where it is. I still feel that way, but if it does have to be moved, it should be done correctly. I have come up with some ideas I would like to run by the artist:
Dear Mrs. Taylor:
What if we found a large venue to display your warm and loving tribute to the workingmen and women of Maine? You know, some place where the citizens of Maine can gather to view the work and exercise their rights of free speech. It would be even more apropos if we could set up tables with documents to sign too. We could have a visitor’s log, a petition to recall the Governor and maybe something to eventually change the rules of an election. (Like having a mandatory runoff if the first ballot has more than two candidates and none of the candidates receives more than 50 percent of the total vote.) I think a lot of Mainers would like that.
I was also thinking of a possible theme to replace your work with. Do you think a mural of tyrannical dictators would be too much, or maybe just a mural of stubborn bullies would make him feel more at home?
Let me know what you think!
