Samuel J. Churchill, 69, of Langseth Avenue in Claremont, NH died Sunday, March 20, at Sullivan County Healthcare in Unity, NH, following a period of failing health. He was born in Fort Fairfield, on January 30, 1942, the son of Edward S. and Pauline (Giggey) Churchill and had been a longtime area resident. Samuel was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School.
Samuel was a veteran of the US Army. He was employed as a pipe fitter and machinist by Sturm Ruger & Company. Samuel had previously been employed by Tambrands, Coy Paper Mill, Dusty’s Café and the Tumble Inn Diner, all in Claremont, NH. His first job was picking potatoes in Maine. He was a member of the Claremont Moose Lodge, #1201 and the American Legion Post #29. Sam was a big fan of the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots. He enjoyed dancing and playing the harmonica.
Members of his family include five sons: Jerry Churchill and his wife, Sharon, Barry Churchill and his wife, Cindy, all of Fort Fairfield, Jason Churchill and Gabrielle, Jeffrey Churchill, all of Claremont, NH, and Samuel Churchill II and his wife, Jenny, Newport, NH; three daughters: Paula Churchill, Dover, NH, Michelle Kennett and her husband, Larry, and Danielle Hines and her husband, Ronnie, all of Claremont, NH; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six brothers: Harold Churchill of Lewiston, Paul Churchill and Timothy Churchill, both of Bangor, Daniel Churchill, David Churchill, and Kevin Churchill, all of Fort Fairfield; six sisters: Roberta Watson, and Diane Brown, both of Fort Fairfield, Laurie Maynard, and Donna Smith, both of Bangor, Carolyn Channell, ME, and Theresa Turner, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters: Elma Churchill and Marilyn Churchill.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., on Friday, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Route 5 in Ascutney, VT, with Bishop Bernard Ferland, officiating. Interment with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post #29 followed in Mountain View Cemetery.
