My $500 is forfeited — thank you!

To the editor:

Towards the end of February I made an appeal to all community animal lovers to match the $500 check I’d made out to the Central Aroostook Humane Society towards their $5,000 Spay/Neuter goal. At the time, we only had about $1,500 towards the goal and it looked as if we’d fall way short.

Well, all you good-hearted, animal-caring supporters can give yourselves a pat on the back and a hearty job-well-done! When I came back from vacation, I found that a total of $4,800-plus had come in and that, with my $500 match, there was a total of over $5,300! At least two generous individuals met my challenge and donated $500 or more. For the animals, I say thank you so much.

Yet what is even more wonderful is to know that, in order for us to have reached this goal, a whole lot of smaller, yet no less sacrificial, amounts were donated. This tells me that there are a whole slew of us who love dogs and cats and are willing to back up this passion with our wallets and purses.

This money will be used to ascertain that every animal released from the shelter will be spayed/neutered or arrangements made for it to be done before they’re of reproductive age. It is incumbent upon all of us who accept the great opportunity to watch over these creatures that God has entrusted to our care to make sure that their numbers are small enough so they all can have forever homes.

Thank you all so much for caring enough to step up and see to it that this “dream” becomes a reality.

We now have a Friends of the Central Aroostook Humane Society group that meets 3-4 times a year to discuss ways to help the shelter. Any and all who are interested are invited to come and there are many ways to help and you alone decide how involved you wish to be and in what ways. It’s extremely informal and friendly and our next meeting is planned for Tuesday, May 10th, 6 p.m., at Turner Memorial Library, lower floor. Please come and feel fulfilled.
