Umpires’ classes

The Northern Maine Softball Umpires Association will hold a class for new umpires on four consecutive Mondays beginning March 21 in Room 220 at Presque Isle High School from 7-9 p.m.

Varsity club honorees

The Presque Isle Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza have collaborated to give athlete of the week awards to volleyball players Meredith Stewart and Nate King for the week of Feb. 28-March 5.

Both Stewart’s and King’s all-around play led the boys and girls teams to victories over Caribou March 3. They receive large one-item pizzas, courtesy of Big Cheese Pizza in Presque Isle.

Hanscom wins Houlton road race

Alfred Hanscom of Presque Isle was the winner of the Wild Katahdin Trust Snow Run, held Feb. 19 in Houlton.

Hanscom’s time of 17:47 on the five-kilometer course was 1:03 faster than runner-up Paul Johnson.

David Tree (19:42), Leo Kashian (20:48) and Logan Thibeau (20:50) took the next three positions, followed by women’s winner Susan Plissey of Stockholm, whose time was 20:57.

Forty six runners competed in the event, the first race in the Aroostook Musterds Running Club’s County Challenge Road Racing Series.

Lifeguard course offered

The Presque Isle Indoor Pool will offer a Lifeguard Instructor Course March 27, April 3 and April 10 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This class will allow participants to instruct lifeguard, professional CPR/AED and community first aid classes. Participants must have a current lifeguard certificate and be at least 17 years of age.

Pre K-K basketball offered at rec center

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has begun registration for children in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten for the spring basketball season. The cost for this program is $18 for the six-week session. The season will begin March 28. Call 764-2545 for more information.

UMPI baseball to host one-day pitching clinic

The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team will host a one-day pitching clinic from 6-9 p.m. at Wieden Gymnasium this evening. Registrants will learn the basics of pitching mechanics and will be given individualized attention throughout the clinic.Pitchers also will have the opportunity to purchase a videotape of their pre- and post-instruction pitching form and will learn about arm care. The cost to attend this clinic is $35. Those interested in participating can contact coach Leo Saucier at 768-9421 for more information.
