Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at 6:30 on Tuesday morning, March 8, at the Aroostook Health Center. The special guests were members of the CAHS State Class C Alpine Ski Championship Team. This is the third state title the team has won in the last five years. Coach Dennis Larrabee shared stories and thoughts on each member of the team: Seniors Logan Brewer and Kaine Kingsbury, Juniors Taylor Garrison and Spencer Stetson and Sophomore Josh Cook.
The special speaker was Rick Duncan of Presque Isle. Rick spoke about the Aroostook House of Comfort, a proposed hospice facility for Aroostook County. The facility would start as a four-bed unit, with another four-bed wing to be added at a later date.
When going through his own mother’s battle with breast cancer, the family realized the need for a facility that would be geared toward hospice issues. He has spent the last couple of years researching hospice and hospice houses in other parts of the state.
Such facilities have suites for patients that contain a kitchenette and a sitting area with a pull-out sofa so that family members can stay with their loved ones more comfortably. There is a nurse on duty at all times as well as rooms for family meetings and for spiritual needs.
Currently, there is a 23-member board of directors for the proposed house and they are now beginning to raise the funds needed to construct the home. They recently received their 501(c)3 statis. A feasibility study is being done to determine the best size and location for such a facility.
