The Lister/Knowlton VFW Post 9389 Ladies’ Auxiliary recently sponsored their annual essay contest, “What America Means to Me,” during which fifth-grade students at the Teague Park Elementary School in Caribou participated.

For their patriotic efforts, awards were presented on Feb. 17, by Auxiliary members. Students whose essays were determined to be the best first three overall received prizes of $25, $15 and $10 respectively. Honorable mention certificates were also awarded to the top 10 student essays.
Each student who participated in the annual contest received pencils designed with the “Pledge of Allegiance” printed on them; rulers displaying all the U.S. Presidents’ photographs; booklets on proper flag etiquette; and the grade-five students also all received small scale American flags.
The top three essay writers were Megan Ouellette, first place; Allison Schwartz, second; and Nic Sleeper, third.
Honorable mention went to Alec Cyr, Sierra Ouellette, Sheridan Schwartz, Cory Jandreau, Kyleigh Demerchant, Camryn Langille and Ciara Marie Blackstone.
