Himie Towle ski race slated for Saturday

The Aroostook Cup racing series comes to a close Saturday, March 12 with the Himie Towle Memorial X-C Ski Frolic at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle.

The mass-start event is freestyle cross country, but a classic track is also available. Snowshoe enthusiasts are encouraged to tour the snowshoe trails.

First- and second-place awards will be presented in 22 racing categories, with special awards going to the overall female and male winners in the 7.5-kilometer race.

Proceeds will benefit Nordic Heritage Sport Club youth programs. The registration fee is $20 for a family, $10 for adults and $5 for youths, with lunch served afterwards. The first 75 to register will receive giveaway items.

Registration will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. A 200-meter race for ages 8 and under begins at 11:30 a.m., a 500-meter race for 9- and 10-year-olds will begin at 11:35 a.m., a one-kilometer race for 11- and 12-year-olds begins at 11:45 a.m. and the 7.5-kilometer feature race begins at noon.

The event is co-sponsored by Cary Medical Center and the Nordic Heritage Sport Club.

Skating show set for Saturday

The Northern Maine Figure Skating Club will present its 29th annual Musical On Ice Saturday at 1 and 7 p.m. at the Forum in Presque Isle.

The club will present “Newspaper Headlines On Ice,” with song titles including “Beatles Medley,” “Let It Snow,” “Peace Train,” “Paparazzi,” “Proud To Be An American,” “What A Wonderful World” and more.

Tickets can be purchased at Carroll’s Auto Sales, from any skating club member or at the door. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Biathlon target practice event

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Outdoor Adventure Program will host a biathlon target practice event Friday, March 11. Local, elite MWSC biathletes will provide guidance as participants test their aim at the world class shooting range at the Nordic Heritage Sports Center.

The registration deadline for this event is March 9 by 4 p.m. Cost for the public to attend is $10. For more information contact Kim McCrea at 768-9401.

Former Caribou skier 3rd in Koch Festival relay

Lauchie Cheney-Seymour, a Northern Skier alum, came in third place in the  2011 Bill Koch Festival grades 5-6 boys relay Feb. 26 in Ripton, Vt.

The event featured 500 skiers in four age categories, with athletes from New England and New York participating.

UMPI baseball to host one-day pitching clinic

The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team will host a one-day pitching clinic from 6-9 p.m. at Wieden Gymnasium March 16. Registrants will learn the basics of pitching mechanics and will be given individualized attention throughout the clinic.Pitchers also will have the opportunity to purchase a videotape of their pre- and post-instruction pitching form and will learn about arm care.
