Rec basketball

There were more evenly-matched games played recently in the Presque Isle Parks and Recreation Department’s fifth- and sixth-grade basketball league.

The Sixers edged out the Thunder, 38-34, behind Griffen Guerrette’s 20 points. Jack Beaulieu netted six points, David Kofstad and Jared Kilcollins both added four points and Haley St. Thomas and Wyatt Kennedy chipped in with two points each for the winners.

On the other side of the hardwood, Emily Wheaton had a team-high 15 points, followed by Issac Devine with 11 and Patrick Cash with eight.

The Sixers were back on the court and they pulled out a 36-25 victory over the Celtics. Guerrette fired in 26 points, including 10 in the final quarter. Beaulieu added six points and Emma Curtis and Wyatt Kennedy each made baskets.

For the Celtics, Marcus Ouellette continued his dominance under the hoop by scoring 18 points, with RJ Gross throwing in seven of his own.

The Lakers beat the Spurs, 49-14, as Ryle Mortland had a game-high 26 points. Also for the winners, Josiah Morse added 10 points, Randon Mortland seven and Gage Young four.

Gavin Kelley led the way for the Spurs by pouring in 10 points, with Adam Paterson and Grant Bridges each netting two.

The Bulls nipped the Thunder, 25-24, behind Caleb Page’s team-high 10 points. Dylan Schinhofen had eight points and Bridges seven for the Bulls.

For the Thunder, Devine had a game-high 11 points, with Madison Fournier adding six points, Chandler Paradis tossing in four and Camden Bates three.

The Celtics and Bulls matched up, with the Green coming out on top, 32-24. The Celtics’ Ouellette led the way with 14 points – 10 coming in the final quarter, followed by Gross chipping in 10 second-half points. Bradley Kinney and Hannah Chalou both added four points.

On the other side of the court, Grant Stewart had nine points and Bearden tallied eight, with Chrissy Skidgel adding five points and Schinhofen making a basket for the Bulls.

The Spurs won big over the Thunder, 33-22. The Spurs’ Jake Kinney had 15 points, followed by Kelley with 12 points, Bridges with four points and Paterson with a hoop. On the opposite bench, the Thunder was led by Wheaton with 13 points, while Cash added seven and Devine making a basket.

The two unbeaten teams, the Sixers and Lakers, met in an epic battle and the Sixers gained the 29-28 triumph. For the winners, Guerrette had a game-high 22 points with two assists, followed by Kennedy with four points, Kilcollins adding a basket and Jack Beaulieu with a clutch foul shot late in the fourth quarter.

As for the Lakers, Randon Mortland scored 13 points with twin Ryle Mortland adding 11 points and the Lakers tenacious point guard Josiah Morse totaling four more.

Dog obedience

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will be starting Dog Obedience class on Monday, March 14 for all that are interested in learning how to help train your canine. For more information, please contact the community center at 764-2545.

Indoor pool classes

The Presque Isle Indoor Pool has begun pre-paid registration for the March 28-June 4, 2011 session.

Parent/Child classes are for children between six months and three years old.  Classes are being offered Tuesday from 9-9:25 a.m. and 6-6:25 p.m. or Saturday from 9-9:25 a.m.

Three year old classes are offered Monday, 4:30-4:55 p.m.; Wednesday, 1-1:25 p.m.; Friday, 9:30-9:55 a.m.; or Saturday, 9:30-9:55 a.m.

Four and five year old lessons are for those unable to swim 10 yards. Classes are being offered Tuesday, 9-9:25 a.m., 3:30-3:55 p.m. or 6:30-6:55 p.m.; Wednesday, 1:30-1:55 p.m. or 4:30-4:55 p.m.; Thursday, 9-9:25 a.m., 3-3:25 p.m., 3:30-3:55 p.m. or 6-6:25 p.m.; Friday, 9-9:25 a.m.; and Saturday, 9-9:25 a.m., 10-10:25 a.m. or 10:30-10:55 a.m.

Swimming three to five-year-old classes are for those able to swim 10 yards. Classes are being offered Tuesday, 3-3:25 p.m.; Wednesday, 4-4:25 p.m.; Thursday, 6-6:25 p.m.; and Saturday, 9:30-9:55 a.m..

Advanced three to five-year-old classes are for those who are able to swim the width of the pool unassisted.  Classes are being offered Wednesday at 9-9:50 a.m. or 1-1:50 p.m.

Learn to Swim 1 are for those who are 6 years old and older and classes are geared toward beginner swimmers.  Classes are being offered Tuesday, 4-4:50 p.m.; Thursday, 3-3:50 p.m., 4-4:50 p.m. or 6-6:50 p.m.; and Saturday, 11-11:50 a.m.

Level 2 classes are for those who are able to swim the width of the pool. Classes are being offered Tuesday, 4-4:50 p.m. or 6-6:50 p.m.; Wednesday, 1-1:50 p.m.; Thursday, 4-4:50 p.m.; and Saturday, 11-11:50 a.m.

Level 3-4 classes are for those who can do front crawl and back crawl and are comfortable with their face in the water. Classes are being offered Tuesday, 3-3:50 p.m.; Wednesday, 2-2:50 p.m. or 6-6:50 p.m.; Thursday, 3-3:50 p.m.; and Saturday, 9-9:50 a.m.

Level 5-6 are for those who are looking to perfect swimming skills. Swimmers must have knowledge of all strokes. Classes are being offered Monday, 6-6:50 p.m.; Tuesday, 4-4:50 p.m.; Wednesday, 2-2:50 p.m.; Thursday, 4-4:50 p.m.; and Saturday, 11-11:50 a.m.

Adult Beginner and Stroke Improvement classes are being offered Wednesday, 9-9:50 a.m. or Thursday, 7-7:50 p.m.

Shallow water exercise classes are being offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10-10:50 a.m. Deep water exercise classes are being offered: Monday and Wednesday, 4-4:50 p.m.; and Tuesday and Thursday, 6-6:50 p.m.

Aqua Zumba classes are being offered Monday and Wednesday, 6-6:50 p.m.
