Kiwanis Club meets

The Easton Kiwanis Club held their last meeting of the month on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Odd Fellow’s Hall with a delicious pot roast supper prepared by Treasurer Loris Allen. The salute to the flag was given and the blessing for the meal by Harold Clark. Those enjoying the supper from the Presque Isle Club were: Tim and Deidra McHahon, and her mother, Frances Heals; Rose Marie Louten and Fay York. Members from the Easton club were: Loris and Mike Allen; Esther and Keith Richardson; Eldora and Clair Carter; Bernard Hussey; Harold Clark; Barbara Blackstone; Mike Cyr; Jeremy Corey; Jessica Blackstone; and guest speaker Kevin Pelletier and his wife, Martha, and granddaughter, Shantell, of Fort Fairfield.

After a brief meeting the floor was turned over to the guest speaker who had just recently returned from his ninth trip to Haiti. Kevin has been going to Haiti to help with the rebuilding of orphanages and other types of shelter for the homeless in that country. He and Pastor Babineau, of Fort Fairfield, who he traveled with to Haiti, worked together for the week. He could not see that much more had been done since he was there last. They had started the church with cinder blocks, getting the walls up but still had to use a tarp for the roof. They were still praying and praising the Lord in the partly-built building. He said it was surprising to see the smiles of joy on the faces of those people after all they had been through and still faced. He said they were not asking for handouts but were very thankful for what they were given them.

Kevin answered questions and showed several albums of the results of the earthquake and some of the places and people and the conditions in which they lived. It was plain that they had made friends there. He was thanked for the interesting update on Haiti and the meeting was adjourned.

Happy Days Club

The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club met on Feb. 24 for their last meeting of the month with a delicious dinner.

After the meal, President Nina Trask opened the meeting with the salute to the flag and the singing of “My Country Tis of Thee,” with Elizabeth Martin at the piano. She went over the work of the last meeting because the secretary had not been there. Ida Doak called the roll with these members present: Ida Doak, Nina Trask, Eldora Carter, Helen King, Loris Ladner, Elizabeth Martin, Joann Johnson, Lindy Fowler, Marie Hewitt, Arlene Ladner, Rogene Thomas, Ezalee Smith and a guest, Jean Ann Ames, of Presque Isle.

Treasurer Ida also reported that she had purchased some items for the club and gave the total still remaining in the checkbook. Nina read a letter from the RSVP organization requesting monetary help with the annual Awards Banquet they will be holding later in the spring. A motion was made by Eldora, and seconded by Ida, that there would be no donation made as it has been decided not to donate to others, other than memorial gifts. After discussion, this motion was rescinded by popular vote. Decisions will be made on this item at a later date.

President Nina also read a letter from the president of the Northern Maine Council on Aging, Gerald Saucier, inviting the group to their meeting on March 21 at Fort Fairfield. The luncheon will be held at noon, and the price will be $4. They would like notice as to how many might attend.

More dues were paid. A note from Dottie Sines and Rebecca Legassie was read about the matter of a meeting on “balance,” to which members were all invited. They decided that they had had that information before so would probably not attend.

In closing, Ida Doak read a comic piece and Arlene Ladner followed by another funny reading. The meeting was adjourned on the motion by Helen King and seconded by Joann Johnson. Some stayed after to play games.
