Snowmobile races

The Limestone Snow Hawks will host vintage snowmobile racing on Saturday, March 5 at Spud Speedway in Caribou. The registration fee is $20 for the first entry and $10 for extra classes.

Chicken stew and ployes will be served in the concession stand. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under.

Owl women fall in Sunrise semis

Emily Pelletier drained five three-pointers to finish with 17 points and Rashell Saucier added 16 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Maine at Presque Isle Lady Owls were beaten by SUNY-Canton, 68-64, in the semifinal round of the Sunrise Conference basketball playoffs Saturday in Windham.

Emily Moore had eight points, Julie Peers seven and Megan Korhonen six for UMPI, the tourney’s No. 3 seed which ended with a final overall record of 11-12.

Ilijana Todorovic had 16 points and six rebounds to pace the Roos, who went on to lose to UM-Machias in the championship game Sunday.

Course offered at Presque Isle pool

The Presque Isle Indoor Pool will offer a Lifeguard Instructor Course March 27, April 3 and April 10 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This class will allow participants to instruct lifeguard, professional CPR/AED and community first aid classes. Participants must have a current lifeguard certificate and be at least 17 years of age.

UMPI to host dog sledding event

The University of Maine at Presque Isle invites the public to participate in its fourth annual Frozen Frenzy week by enjoying dog sled rides Wednesday, March 2 being offered from noon to 5 p.m. at the UMPI tennis courts.

Heywood Kennel Sled Dog Adventures of Stockholm will have two sets of friendly working huskies and sleds will be guided by registered Maine guides. Children and adults are invited to attend – two people go in one sled. The cost is $2 per person per ride and participants can take as many rides as you want. Baseball umpire clinics

The Northern Maine Board of Approved Baseball Umpires will begin holding clinics for new members beginning Wednesday, March 2. Interested individuals should meet in the lecture hall on the Northern Maine Community College campus at 6 p.m. that first night.

The cost of the clinic is $40, which includes the rule book. Other class dates will be held on Tuesdays, March 8, 15, 22, and exam night is March 29.

Those passing the board test and mechanics session will be eligible to begin working this spring at the middle school level. For more information, contact board interpreter Bill Casavant at 764-0810.

Hanscom wins Houlton road race

Alfred Hanscom of Presque Isle was the winner of the Wild Katahdin Trust Snow Run, held Feb. 19 in Houlton.

Hanscom’s time of 17:47 on the five-kilometer course was 1:03 faster than runner-up Paul Johnson.

David Tree (19:42), Leo Kashian (20:48) and Logan Thibeau (20:50) took the next three positions, followed by women’s winner Susan Plissey of Stockholm, whose time was 20:57.

Forty six runners competed in the event, the first race in the Aroostook Musterds Running Club’s County Challenge Road Racing Series.
