The public is invited to attend a gallery talk by Littleton artist Frank Sullivan at the Blue Moon Gallery, inside Visions, at 66 Main St. in Houlton on Thursday, March 3 at 3:30 p.m. The talk is being presented by the Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project in conjunction with the current exhibit “Wish You Were Here: Images of Aroostook County by Frank Sullivan” which is on display until the end of March.
Sullivan is a full-time artist with a B.A. in visual arts from the College of the Holy Cross. He also studied printmaking at the American University on a graduate fellowship and later studied graphic design and illustration at the School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and figure drawing at the Worcester Art Museum. He moved to Littleton from Massachusetts in January 2006 and converted the old potato house on his property into a studio and gallery where he currently displays his work and teaches classes in drawing and painting throughout the year. Mr. Sullivan has won numerous awards for his artwork and his work hangs in private collections throughout the country.
The current show at the Blue Moon Gallery features a selection of oil paintings and pastel drawings inspired by the agricultural landscape near Sullivan’s home, particularly the Littleton and Monticello area. Although working from a landscape tradition, Sullivan’s work incorporates elements of abstract expressionism, focusing on the physical act of painting and the inherent working properties of his materials to transcend mere physical description in an attempt to depict a personal and emotional response to the subjects.
His work can also be seen regularly at Visions and The Courtyard Café in Houlton, The Eastport Gallery in Eastport, and Morningstar Art & Framing in Presque Isle. His work can be viewed online at: http://rainbarrowstudio.blogspot.com.
The artist will discuss his working process and materials, his influences and inspiration and the evolution of his particular style. He will discuss the development of some of the specific paintings in the show and will also welcome questions from the public.
The talk promises to be informative and educational and an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about the processes of a working artist.
