Wintergreen Arts Center
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department and Wintergreen Arts Center will begin registration for the early spring session. Registration for Mini-Monet playgroup and after-school programs is now under way at the William V. Haskell Community Center. The cost for Mini-Monet’s is $25 per child and the after-school program is $30 per child. For more information, contact the recreation department at 764-2545.
The recreation department has announced the addition of two new classes being offered at Wintergreen Arts Center. The first is for middle school students in grades 7 and 8. Students will spend time learning about the arts in a variety of planned activities and hands-on projects. This class meets on Thursdays from 3-5:30 p.m. The second new class is Art Fusion Friday, which meets Fridays from 3-5:30 p.m. and is open to students in grades 4-8. This class offers an in-depth experience in creative writing, drama, music and visual arts for students who have previously attended an Arts & Parks after-school program and submitted a simple application with an artistic sample. Applications are available at the recreation office.
Students who have not participated in prior sessions but would like to be a part of Art Fusion Friday may contact Wintergreen Arts Center to schedule an interview with the Arts & Parks Program Director, Betsy Allen, by calling 762-3576 or by sending an email to wintergreenarts@gmail.com.
Grades 5-6 basketball
The fifth- and sixth-grade basketball league kicked off with the Celtics taking on the Bulls. On the Celtics side of the court, Marcus Ouellette had a game-high 16 points, taking the ball to the hole with extreme aggressiveness.
Also scoring for the Celtics was Hannah Chalou with six points, Bradley Kinney with two points along with assists, Jordan Bonville with two points and Kayla Saucier with a foul shot. On the other side of the hardwood, the Bulls’ Madison Bearden had a team-high 10 points, followed by Grant Stewart with eight points and 11 rebounds and Caleb Page with two points. The players battled it out from the jump ball to the final buzzer with the Celtics pulling off the 27-22 win.
In last Wednesday’s doubleheader, the Thunder took on the Spurs. The game was very evenly matched until the fourth quarter of the game. For the Thunder, Patrick Cash led the way with 11 points, followed by Emily Wheaton and Isaac Devin each with six. For the Spurs, Jake Kinney and Grant Bridges both had four points, with Adam Paterson adding three points and Gavin Kelley chipping in a basket. The Thunder won, 23-13.
In the nightcap, the Lakers met the Sixers, which turned into an instant classic as the two teams ended with a 35 deadlock after three overtimes couldn’t decide a winner. The Lakers had three scorers in double figures, with Josiah Morse leading the way with 14 points, eight which came during the three overtimes, followed by Randon Mortland with 11 points and Ryle Mortland with 10. On the other side, the Sixers’ Griffen Guerrette had a game-high 26 points, with Jack Beaulieu netting six. David Kofstad and Emma Curtis both made hoops, while Jared Kilcollins added a foul shot.
Adult volleyball
The recreation department is offering adult volleyball Monday nights from 7-9 p.m. This program is informal and cost $1 per night. If you are interested, please contact the recreation center at 764-2545 or contact Tammy Lothrop at 227-0712 for more information.
Northern Zumba
The recreation department and Northern Zumba are pleased to offer ZUMBA! This program will be offered Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings from 9-10 a.m. The fee for the program is $6 per class or $50 for 10 classes.
