The recreation department has announced the addition of two new classes being offered at Wintergreen Arts Center. The first is for middle school students in grades 7 and 8. Students will spend time learning about the arts in a variety of planned activities and hands-on projects. This class meets on Thursdays from 3-5:30 p.m. The second new class is Art Fusion Friday, which meets Fridays from 3-5:30 p.m. and is open to students in grades 4-8. This class offers an in-depth experience in creative writing, drama, music and visual arts for students who have previously attended an Arts & Parks after-school program and submitted a simple application with an artistic sample. Applications are available at the recreation office.

Students who have not participated in prior sessions but would like to be a part of Art Fusion Friday may contact Wintergreen Arts Center to schedule an interview with the Arts & Parks Program Director, Betsy Allen, by calling 762-3576 or by sending an email to wintergreenarts@gmail.com.

March 1-25 features Seusstastic Study! Welcome to Seussville! The great poet, writer, and cartoonist’s wacky, whimsical style will be studied in March (his birthday month) through reading Dr. Seuss classics. The students will craft their own “Cat in the Hat” and Seuss-inspired character! Time will be spent creating their own character, writing about him/her, drawing him/her, creating a storyline involving this character, and then sewing a hand-puppet representing their new creations. The last class of the month will be a performance, with family members invited.

March 29-April 8 features Earth Friendly Do It Yourself.  Celebrate Earth Day and do your own little parts in saving the planet! The students will learn how to create their own everyday items such as soap, lip balm, candles and sidewalk chalk. They will also learn how much money they can save by doing it themselves.

Father/Daughter Valentine’s Dance

The department will host its annual Father/Daughter Valentine’s Dance on Feb. 11 from 7-9 p.m. The cost for the dance is $7 per couple. Music will be provided by “Hits on the Run.” All girls in grades K-6 are invited to come dance, socialize and enjoy some great refreshments.
