Now family and friends work to help her keep it

Destiny is a 5-year-old girl who suffers from Apraxia — a chronic disease she was born with that prevents her from being able to speak. Destiny is able to communicate her thoughts through sign language, but for almost a year she’s been able to utilize a computerized communication device on loan from the Child Development Services that allows her to “speak” utilizing the computer with everyone — not just the sign-language savvy. This small piece of technology has made a huge impact on Destiny’s life, but needs to be returned to CDS this coming August; family and friends of the 5-year-old are currently raising funds to hopefully purchase a similar device for Destiny to have for her very own so that she can keep talking which is, after all, what little girls are famous for. Those interested in helping can currently donate their recyclables to Destiny’s cause at the Washburn Redemption Center located at 1296 Main Street in Washburn. Additional information regarding fund-raisers and charitable events to keep Destiny’s voice heard will be available in future issues of The Aroostook Republican.
