With holidays behind, high school basketball teams are approaching the midway point of the season.
The Hodgdon and Houlton boys are 13th and 16th in Class C, respectively, with Hodgdon, 1-4 and Houlton, 1-5.
The top 10 teams in the C division are: No. 1 PVHS, 5-1; No. 2 Calais, 5-0; No. 3 Lee, 5-0; No. 4 Penquis, 4-1; No. 5 Stearns, 4-3; No. 6 Sumner, 4-1; No. 7 George Stevens Academy, 4-2; No. 8 Fort Kent, 4-3; No. 9 Washington Academy, 1-4 and No. 10 Foxcroft, 4-2.
With a 4-2 record, the Hodgdon Lady Hawks are in 13th position in the most recent Class C girls Heal Point standings. Leading the Class C division are: No. 1, Houlton, 5-0; No. 2, Central, 5-0; No. 3 Dexter, 5-2; No. 4 Orono, 3-3; No. 5 Penquis, 4-1; No. 6 Foxcroft, 3-3; No. 7 Madawaska, 4-2; No. 8 Lee, 2-5; No. 9 Woodland, 4-0 and No. 10 Penobscot Valley, 2-6.

The Katahdin Cougars (3-2) are ranked eighth in the Heal Point standings for Class D behind top seeded CAHS, 5-0; No. 2 Schenck, 5-1; No. 3 Jonesport-Beals, 5-1; No. 4 Easton, 5-1; No. 5 Washburn, 4-0; No. 6 Fort Fairfield, 4-2 and No. 7 Machias, 4-0. Ranked No. 9 and No. 10 are Bangor Christian, 2-5 and GHCA, 3-3. Southern Aroostook is number 12 with a 2-3 record, while East Grand is 19th with a 0-3 record.
There is lots of equality in records in the Class D girls Heal Point standings, as the Southern Aroostook girls are sixth with a 3-2 record, falling in line behind No. 1 CAHS, 6-1; No. 2 Washburn, 5-1; No. 3 Schenck, 4-3; No. 4 Fort Fairfield, 3-1 and No. 5 Deer Isle-Stonington, 4-1. The last four teams in the playoff picture at this time are No. 7 Easton, 4-2; No. 8 Bangor Christian, 5-3; No. 9 Shead, 3-2 and No. 10 Limestone/MSSM, 1-6.
East Grand (0-3), Greater Houlton Christian Academy (0-5) and Katahdin (0-5) girls are ranked 18-20, respectively.

Cougars outscored in
second half for loss
Last Tuesday, the Cougars met the Tigers in a showdown going to Fort Fairfield, 63-41.
Katahdin trailed host Fort Fairfield 32-26 at halftime before they were outscored 31-15 in the second half to take the loss.
The two big men for Katahdin, Colton Bivighouse and Brandon Robinson hit double figures with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Kolby Gallagher added seven points in the game.
In the junior varsity contest, Katahdin won 58-42.
Warriors lose by one point
to Beavers
The Southern Aroostook Warriors are entering a stretch of games where coach Vaughn Sleeper likes the matchups. During the next week, they will be playing teams such as East Grand, Hodgdon, GHCA and Ashland.
The Southern Aroostook Warriors are sitting just outside a playoff bid in 12th position in Class D with a 2-3 record.
Last week, they played Washburn, which is ranked fifth in Class D with a 4-0 record. The Warriors couldn’t hold the Beavers off, as they won 69-68 on Mason Turner’s 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the game.BUMPED — Hodgdon’s Mariah Wiley gets bumped by Washburn’s Maegan Fitzpatrick during Monday’s game in Hodgdon. “We played a triangle and two on [Jordan] McLaughlin and [Mitchell] Worster, which allowed the other guys to get decent looks,” said Sleeper. “The last one by Turner found the bottom of the net.”
Connor Fitzpatrick, whose father Louie is a Houlton native, paced a balanced Washburn effort with 20 points, while Turner and Mitch Worster each scored 12 points.
The Warriors started the game with an 18-16 lead, but saw it dissolve to a 38-31 halftime deficit. After three quarters, the game was tight, with the Beavers leading by a hoop, 52-50.
Pat Goodall was on fire, pouring in a game-high 30 points for the Warriors, while Rob Rockwell, Jesse Boulier and Cody Robinson all had eight points apiece.
Not only is Goodall effective on offense, he is putting in the effort on the other end of the court as well.
“Pat has become our defensive stopper, too,” said Sleeper. “He is becoming a complete rounded ball player which is nice to see.”
In the junior varsity game, SACS won, 56-38.
The Warriors need to improve as the season progresses to hit their season goal of making a trip to Bangor.
“We have played well at times, but we need to be more consistent and cut down on our turnovers,” said Sleeper. “I like our team, our chances and to see us getting stronger with experience game-by-game. Our goal is to stay in the top eight at the season’s end.”
Lady Hawks suffer two losses
On Monday in Hodgdon, the Lady Hawks suffered their second loss of the season to a talented Washburn Beaver club, coached by Mike Carlos of Houlton, 60-31.
It took nearly six minutes before Hodgdon scored their first hoop of the game, trailing 7-1, but at the end of the quarter, Washburn led 11-5. The Lady Hawks rallied and tied the game at 16-all at the 3:48 mark of the second quarter, but Washburn ended the quarter with a 5-0 run to take a 21-16 halftime advantage.
The Washburn Beavers came out energized behind Campbell, who was able to use her ability in the post or from the perimeter, racking up 13 of her game-high 22 points in the third, as the Beavers outscored Hodgdon, 20-7 to break the game open, 41-23.
Hodgdon’s Mariah Wiley tossed in 11 points, while Cierra Willette added five.
Last Tuesday after leading 11-8 to start the game, the Central Aroostook girls built a 21-13 halftime lead and a 33-18 third-quarter advantage en route to a 43-26 victory over visiting Hodgdon.

In the junior varsity game, Hodgdon came away with a 33-23 victory.
GHCA boys overtake Shead; girls bow
The Greater Houlton Christian Academy Eagles, which are ranked No. 10 in the most recent Heal Point standings, picked up a 65-53 victory over Shead in Hodgdon last Wednesday.
The Eagles were ahead 26-10 to start the game and 39-20 at halftime. After the third quarter, GHCA held a 50-32 lead.
Micah Wiley scored half of the Eagles’ first-quarter points with 18 points, scoring a game-high 33 overall while Deyrell Vargas added 10 more points. Russell Socoby chipped in with eight, while Isaiah Straubel and Ethan Holmes both scored six points.
In the junior varsity game, Shead won 71-38.
In girls action last Wednesday in Hodgdon, the GHCA Lady Eagles fell to Shead, 59-19.
The Lady Eagles trailed 16-6 to start the game and 35-8 at intermission. After three, the Tigers led, 59-11.
Destinee Neureuther led the Lady Eagles with six points.
Vikings overpowered
The East Grand Vikings were overpowered by Woodland, 69-29 last Wednesday in Danforth.
The Dragons opened the game with a 21-7 advantage and a 37-17 halftime lead, cruising to the win.
Dustin Morse scored 13 points and Billy Holmes added six more for East Grand.
