So you think you’re a good shooter and you’re ready to test yourself against players your own age? Then this is the event for you!

The Maine Recreation and Parks Association (M.R.P.A.) / Red Claws Hot Shot Competition is a basketball skills competition for youth 9-18 years of age. It involves shooting from five “hot spots” marked on one end of the basketball court. This competition will test each contestant’s speed, shooting, dribbling and rebounding ability.

LOCAL WINNERS of the Elk Hoop Shoot — This event is a foul-shooting event for kids ages 8 to 13. They shoot 25 foul shots and the top winners in each age group move on from our local competition to a Northern Regional Competition at UMPI on Jan. 8. The winners there move on to the next round of competition and keep moving on till the National Finals in Springfield, Mass., where the winners are enshrined in the National Basketball Hall of Fame. This local event was sponsored by the Recreation Department and PE classes at Fort Street Elementary and was held during PE classes. Pictured in front from left are: Hunter Wardwell, Breanne Bradbury and Kelsey Dominique. Back row: Josh Chandler, Clark Bradbury and Nicky Tompkins.

Each participant must first compete in a local Hot Shot event sponsored by your community recreation department (in this case, Mars Hill Rec Department). Division winners will advance to the Regional Competition. After the completion of all regional events, the winners and runner-ups of each age division then advance to the M.R.P.A. Red Claws State Hot Shot Competition. Participants at the State Competition compete for first place and runner-up awards.

The final Mars Hill competition will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Center on Thursday, Jan. 13. For more information, contact Dave Collins at: marshillrec@hotmail.com.

Anatomy fundraisers

The CAHS anatomy class is planning a trip to Philadelphia in April to visit the Mutter Museum. There are eight students that plan to pursue a career in the medical field, and the museum features past medical marvels that shaped the treatments and medications offered today. In addition, the students hope to also see the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Liberty Bell Center, the National Constitution Center, Eastern State Penitentiary and Liberty 360 — a 3-D panoramic theater showcasing America’s historical journey.

The class will be holding several fundraisers to raise the money necessary for them to take the trip. They have a private donor who has pledged $1 for every $2 that the students raise.

Current fundraisers include tickets on a quarter side of beef, which will be available in mid-January. Tickets are six for $5. The beef is being donated by Donovan Family Farms and will be cut to the winner’s specifications by Garey’s Slaughter House.

Another is a “calendar” sale for the month of January. Tickets are $10 each. There are 22 chances to win cash as they will draw a ticket on 22 of the 31 days in January. There will be two $200 drawings, four $100 drawings and 16 $20 drawings.

For more information, contact Leigh Belair, anatomy teacher, at 425-2811.

Gray honored

Dawn GrayMars Hill resident Dawn Gray has been selected to attend the Rasmussen Leadership Academy, launched by Rasmussen College to help online students identify and strengthen their unique leadership skills and learn about their application in educational, professional and community settings. Gray, who serves on the Mars Hill Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, was chosen from a pool of nearly 70 applicants as one of 20 students who will benefit from the one-of-a-kind program in its inaugural year. She is pursuing her associate’s degree in health information technology through the School of Allied Health at Rasmussen College.

Developed in response to an evolving, increasingly virtual higher education industry, the prestigious Rasmussen Leadership Academy is offered free-of-charge to interested Rasmussen College online students, who are selected following an application process. Beginning January 2011, enrolled students will learn about leadership styles, communication and conflict management skills and the importance of diversity awareness.

“At Rasmussen College, we are dedicated to providing the education and skilled training necessary for students in all programs to succeed in today’s dynamic and diverse professional environments. This well-rounded approach often includes exposure to leadership and personal development opportunities,” Rasmussen College Online Campus Regional Academic Dean Ann Morgan said. “The Rasmussen Leadership Academy provides a forum for students to begin thinking about their future vocational and career goals and the attributes that will help them meet those goals following graduation from Rasmussen College.”

Rasmussen College students who have been enrolled for two or more quarters, are currently enrolled in at least two online classes and have a 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible to apply for the Rasmussen Leadership Academy. Members of the Rasmussen Leadership Academy are selected based on their references and a personal statement explaining how they see themselves as a leader and why they think the program will benefit them.
