CARIBOU – The Viking wrestling team continued its early-season roll, topping Fort Kent at home last Wednesday 45-30 to improve its record in duel meets to 8-1 overall.

Caribou’s wins in contested matches were recorded by Michael Selander in the 125-lb. division, who pinned the Warriors’ Cassidy Spencer in 3 minutes and 24 seconds; Lance Jandreau in 140, who prevailed on a 9-2 decision over Jeremy Voisine; Colby Conroy in 152, who pinned Jacob Tardiff in 5:34; Deion Caudill in 189, who pinned Jeremy Theriault in 1:39; and Levi Swan in 285, who also won by fall over Brenton Levesque in 4:58.

“Swan bumped up to the heavyweight division and won his match,” said Viking coach Todd Albert, who noted a pair of his wrestlers were also strong in defeat.

“[171-lb. wrestler] Jake Maher lost a decision to Austin Theriault, but was on his back for almost the final two minutes but didn’t give up and get pinned,” the coach said, “while Brendon Wood [in 130] lost a close 4-3 decision in three overtimes to Cody Lozier, but he had lost the previous week by a 17-8 decision, so he has made a lot of gains.”

The Vikes also received forfeit wins by Chelsea Martin in 103, Jason Case in 119 and Adam Thibodeau in 215.

“We saw some improvements from the last time we wrestled Fort Kent a week earlier,” Albert said. “We have to keep making gains and improvements each week.”

Caribou was scheduled to compete in Hermon’s Holiday Tournament yesterday at 10 a.m. before making the trip to Blue Hill today for matches against Ellsworth and host George Stevens Academy beginning at 10 a.m.

The Vikes are back on the road next Wednesday when they make the trip to Howland to square off against Penobscot Valley HS.
