Lady Owls cruise past Moose
The University of Maine at Presque Isle women downed the visiting Lady Moose of UM-Augusta Sunday, 86-41, with all 11 Lady Owls figuring in the scoring and four reaching double figures.
Emily Pelletier logged 15 points, connecting on five three-point field goals, while Rashell Saucier had 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists to lead UMPI, which improved to 2-6.
Renee Moore, who had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Julie Peers (12 points, five rebounds and five steals) were other Owl standouts.
Emily Moore had a fine all-around game with nine points, six assists and five steals, while Megan Korhonen hadd six points and five assists.
The Owls now will enjoy some time off during the winter break, but return to the court Jan. 9 with a 1 p.m. home contest against Maine Maritime Academy.
Men break into win column
The UM-Presque Isle men’s basketball team made it a sweep at home over the weekend, breaking a seven-game losing streak to begin the season.

The Owls defeated the UM-Augusta Moose Sunday, 97-79, behind 24 points from Gerardo Vasquez, who nailed seven three-point field goals in the contest.
Patrick Manifold, Aaron Hutchins and Clifford McDonald scored 12 points apiece for UMPI. Manifold also grabbed 13 rebounds. Devon Peaslee notched 15 points for the winners.
The previous afternoon, UMPI beat Eastern Maine Community College, 88-64. McDonald posted 20 points and 16 boards to lead the attack, while Peaslee and Vasquez scored 16 points each. Chris Coffin (11 points) and Hutchins (10) were also in double figures for coach Terry Cummings’ squad.
Kyle Corrigan had five assists to go along with his seven points. Manifold chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.
The Owls are off for winter break and next play at Bowdoin Jan. 13. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
Vasquez gains national honor
UM-Presque Isle sophomore guard Gerardo Vasquez has been named the Association of Division III Independents men’s basketball player of the week. The native of Houston, Texas averaged 20 points per game in a pair of wins and shot 55 percent (11-of-20) from three-point land on the weekend.
In a 97-79 triumph over UM-Augusta, he connected on seven three-pointers on his way to 24 points. He also had three steals and an assist in the win.
