Riddle Me Red

A twinkle
they say
and a nod
of the head

Just thinkin’
about it
I was out
of my bed

Bounding a bounce
down off the step
making my way
to the presents You bet!

Oh how the lights
shimmered and shone
I could hardly wait
Do I have to? I groaned

Filled and spilling
stockings were dragging
bending the hooks
from the mantle and sagging

In the corner of the room
quietly watching
waiting with wonder
she sat and was rocking

The look on her face
was sweet a bit sly
her smile was curled upward
I had to know why

Her saucer of cookies
had left only crumbs
two glasses once milk
empty now gone

I know I had left
a note for the gent
in her lap it lay crumpled
it must be a hint

So I asked if she’d seen
the man in the suit
red velvet trimmed white
with some shiny black boots

Long bearded glasses
eyes happy my golly
rosey red cheeks
and a laugh that was jolly

Surely you must have
you’ve been here all night
I thought I would ask
I so hoped you might

Dear can’t say for sure
I have seen such a man
Though the milk tasted good
and those cookies were grand

But I fell asleep
while midnight chimed
with sugar plum sweetness
I dreamt so sublime

I could’ve heard sleigh bells
and a thump on the roof
quite possibly
it could have been tiny hoofs

I did notice something
had left sooty marks
all over the floor
Butter and Deto did bark

For certain I’d say though
someone was here
look at the tree
and the goodies it’s clear

Enough with this mystery
clearly I see
I cannot be dreamin’
these presents for me?

With her slight wink
and mischievous smile
she giggled and motioned
to the big pile.

So no more waiting
It’s time that I say
Merry Christmas to you
and have a great day

Oh about that man
in the red velvet clothes
I believe it’s a secret
she still only knows
