In the second week of the high school basketball season, the Hodgdon Lady Hawks are off to a 4-0 start in Class C, while the Houlton girls are 2-0.
The following are results from the week Dec. 15-21
Hodgdon girls are 4-0; GHCA girls looking for win
The Hodgdon Lady Hawks picked up another win on Monday as they turned up the defense in the second half to pull away from visiting Katahdin, 56-33.REACHING — GHCA’S Olivia Lord, No. 54, and Hodgdon’s Haley Gardiner reach for the ball on rebounding action during last Saturday night’s game in Hodgdon. The Lady Hawks led 14-11 to start the game and held a slim 25-23 advantage at halftime. Then, the Lady Hawks held Katahdin to two third-quarter points to pull away, 33-25 after three quarters en route to the win.
Jennah Steamer led Hodgdon with 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Maya Gardiner had six of her 10 points in the final stanza. Lacey McQuarrie added eights points, as well in the fourth. Mariah Wiley scored six points, grabbed seven rebounds and made four assists. Megan Merry keyed Katahdin’s offense with nine points, while Morgan Livezey dropped in eight points.
The Lady Cougars slip to 0-4.
In the junior varsity game, Hodgdon won 27-8.
The Hodgdon girls cruised by visiting Greater Houlton Christian Academy, 65-15 in the first game held last Saturday in Hodgdon.
Leading 22-6, the Lady Hawks held GHCA scoreless in the second period to hold a 43-6 halftime advantage and after the third led 56-8.
Steamer scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Hodgdon, while Wiley netted 10 points and H. Gardiner added nine.
For GHCA, Destinee Neureuther scored nine points, with Hannah Emery scoring four.
Last Thursday, the Lady Hawks overtook Limestone/MSSM, 45-26 behind Steamer’s 15 points, 10 of which she scored in the pivotal third quarter, as the Lady Hawks outscored the Eagles, 20-0.
Hodgdon led 5-2 to start the game and 14-10 at intermission before pulling away.
In the junior varsity game, Limestone won 26-10.
Last Thursday, the GHCA teams both lost to visiting Wisdom at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
In the girls game, Wisdom had its first win, as they picked up the 38-20 victory.
The Pioneers led 12-6 at intermission and 24-12 after the third en route to the win.
Neureuther was GHCA’s offensive leader with seven points, while Lauren Bishop added four points.
East Grand teams look
for first win
The East Grand boys team (0-2) fell to host Greenville, 73-17 last Saturday. Logan Crone led the Vikings with six points. The East Grand girls (0-2) didn’t fare much better, as they were defeated 60-30 by Greenville on Saturday.
Shaunna Beaudoin paced East Grand with 15 points, while Jenny Armstrong and Kim Armstrong each added four points.
Hodgdon boys pick up win; GHCA boys drop two

Hodgdon led 15-12 to start the game, but trailed by one at halftime, 33-32. By the end of the third, the Hawks had built a 50-40 lead only to watch it dissolve into a decisive fourth quarter.
Nick Lunn netted 19 points, while Josh Hudson scored 18 points; Jake Tidd chipped in with 17 more.
For GHCA, Micah Wiley racked up 24 points, while Russell Socoby tallied 17 points for the 2-3 Eagles.
Visiting Fort Fairfield raced by Hodgdon last Thursday, 66-40. The Tigers led from the onset of the game: 18-13 after the first quarter and 39-21 at halftime. After the third, Fort Fairfield stayed in control, 52-33.
Lunn’s 15 points led Hodgdon while Josh Hudson scored 10 points.
In the junior varsity game, Fort Fairfield won, 43-19.
Last Tuesday at Hodgdon, the Washburn Beavers dominated 91-49. The Beavers took a 33-6 opening lead and held a 55-20 halftime advantage. After three, Washburn was ahead, 77-44.
Hodgdon’s Hudson scored 14 points.
In the junior varsity game, Hodgdon won 43-40.
Last Thursday, the GHCA teams both lost to visiting Wisdom at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
In the boys game, the Eagles led 22-11 at halftime, only to see Wisdom climb back into the game. The Pioneers outscored GHCA, 36-18, for the win.
Wiley and Ethan Holmes paced GHCA’s offense with 12 points apiece, while Vargas had eight.
Katahdin boys defeat SACS, BC; girls defeated
The Katahdin Cougars (3-1) defeated visiting Southern Aroostook on Monday, 67-53.
The Cougars took an early 18-3 lead and managed a 33-24 halftime advantage. Colton Bivighouse scored 17 of his 25 points in the first half to carry his team, while Brady McNally scored 14 points and Kolby Gallagher netted 12.
The Warriors, 2-2, were led by Cody Robinson’s 23 points and Anthony Diaferio’s 10.
In the junior varsity game, Katahdin won 58-44.
Both Katahdin boys and girls played Bangor Christian last Saturday in Stacyville, with the boys taking a 57-33 win, while the girls fell, 34-26.
In the boys game, Katahdin led 7-6 to start the contest, but pulled away at halftime, 22-15. They upped their advantage after three quarters, 40-24.
Gallagher and McNally paced Katahdin’s offense with 12 points each, while Robinson netted 11 more for the 2-1 Cougars. Bivighouse added nine, while Livezey chipped in with seven.
Last Wednesday, the Cougars fell to defending Class C state champion Schenck, 61-47 in East Millinocket.
The Wolverines led 12-10 to start the game before a 22-9 second-quarter run carried them to their third win without a loss. Schenck led 46-28 at the end of three.
Robinson led Katahdin with 20 points, while Bivighouse tallied 10 points and Gallagher and Livezey chipped in with eight and seven points, respectively.
In girls action, the Lady Cougars had two losses on the week, as they fell to Bangor Christian 34-26 and Schenck, 45-17.
Against Bangor Christian, the Lady Cougars led 10-5 before watching that lead dissolve at halftime, 17-13. The 3-1 Patriots held a 32-23 third-quarter advantage en route to the win.
Megan Merry paced the 0-3 Cougars with 16 points.
Against Schenck on Friday in East Millinocket, Katahdin was outscored 13-4 in the second quarter, as Schenck held a 21-8 advantage. After three quarters of play, the Wolverines were ahead, 33-10.
Merry scored seven for Katahdin, while Patterson and Brittany Fogarty each had four points.
In the junior varsity game, Schenck picked up a 34-14 win.
Southern Aroostook teams split
The Southern Aroostook girls defeated visiting Ashland, 66-27 on Monday behind Shelby Hartin’s game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds.
The Lady Warriors are 1-2.
The Lady Warriors opened the first quarter with a 17-6 lead and built a 34-15 halftime advantage. After the third, SACS pushed the score to 53-23.
Kaitlyn Sommers posted 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Sable Altvater (15 rebounds) and Olivia Raymond scored 11 points apiece. Jasmine Rockwell had five points and 11 assists.
In the junior varsity game, SACS won 31-8.
The Lady Warriors took a 48-42 loss to Washburn last Thursday. (See story on Page 9).
Washburn led 15-6 to open the game and held a 29-15 halftime lead. Jasmine Rockwell led SACS with 16 points, while freshman Altvater posted 14 points and Hartin tallied 10 points.
In the junior varsity game, SACS won 26-24.
At Ashland last Wednesday, the Warriors overpowered the Hornets, 79-41.
Freshman Rob Rockwell was team-high scorer with 24 points, as Anthony Diaferio added 16 points, including three, 3-pointers. Jesse Boulier tallied 14 and Cody Robinson added 11 for the Warriors.
The Warriors led 22-11 to open the game and 42-24 at intermission. After the third, SACS held a 60-34 advantage.
