Anderson, Margaret, 96, of Stockholm, at Caribou, on December 17, 2010. A memorial service and interment will be in the spring. Arrangements are in the care of the Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, Caribou.


AR Margaret_AndersonSTOCKHOLM – Margaret Anderson, 96, died December 17, 2010, at the Caribou Nursing Home in Caribou. She was born on Lebanon Road, New Sweden, ME, July 27, 1913 the daughter of Axel W and Hilda Augusta Johnson.

She is survived by her son, Benjamin H. Anderson, of Lexington Park, Md.; a daughter, Linda McCormack of Buxton, Maine; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Harold F. Anderson; three sisters, Helen Borjeson, of New Sweden, Ruth Eckstrom of Harrisville, N.H. and Thelma Wessell of Wellsley, Mass.

Margaret graduated from Caribou High School in 1932. She was employed at the Stockholm Post office part time. During World War II, she moved to Worchester, Mass., where she lived with her sister, Helen, and worked at the Norton Emery Wheel Company, the first to manufacturer the grinding wheel.    She then moved to Boston, where she lived with Ingrid Lind and worked at the Salada Tea Company. During WWII, Margaret was part of a group of women who regularly wrote letters to soldiers about town news.

Margaret was a life member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stockholm. She was a choir member for many years and active in the Lutheran Women’s Group and women’s Bible study. She was the first County Chairman of the Women’s Extension of Aroostook County and a charter member of the Stockholm Women’s Extension. Margaret also was Stockholm Town Librarian, a charter member of the Stockholm Historical Museum, a substitute teacher, active in 4H, as well as, mother and farm wife. She was a prolific reader and collector of books.

Margaret and Harold traveled throughout the U.S., Central America and Sweden. In Sweden, they met relatives and friends so Margaret had many pen pals.  They spent a winter in Florida, missed friends and family and never returned.

A Memorial service and interment will be in the spring. Donations can be made in her honor to the Stockholm Trinity Lutheran Church and Stockholm Historical Museum.
