The Houlton-Hodgdon Black Hawks picked up a season-opening win against visiting Gardiner on Saturday at the Millar Civic Center.
The Black Hawks skated past the Tigers, 6-1.
“It was a sloppy game,” said Black Hawks coach Joel Trickey. “We will need to play better as team if we are to have the success we think we should have this season.”
Cody Briggs opened the game with a goal, followed by a quick Houlton-Hodgdon score. Then, Gardiner slipped one by Black Hawks’ goalie Malik Abouleish midway through the second period to make the game 2-1.
Bryant Whitley scored for Gardiner on an assist from Matt McDonald.
But, the Black Hawks regrouped and scored four more goals — another from Briggs, two from Dylan Gard and single tallies from D.J. McGary and Sam Fitzpatrick. Assists came from Logan Holmes, Nick Chase, Ben and Brandon Ward, Kam Lincoln and Parker Sanderson.
Abouleish made 20 saves on 21 shots. For Gardiner, Blake Cote stopped 22 of 28 shots.
The Black Hawks will be in action at 7:40 p.m. in Sawyer Arena against John Bapst on Friday and back home on Wednesday, Dec. 22 with a 6 p.m. against Presque Isle.
