Susan Lindsey replaces Nikki Larson as the coach of the East Grand varsity girls’ basketball team after being hired for the position by the school board in June.
Lindsey explained there were two reasons why she decided to throw her hat into the ring for the position.
“First, it was for the love of the game,” she said. “And, secondly, because my daughter plays and I love to be involved in what my children do.”
An East Grand alumna, Lindsey isn’t new to coaching, as she was assistant varsity coach in Madison and served as the East Grand Middle School girls’ coach. She played her high school ball right at East Grand School from 1981 to ’85. She went on to play for Husson College from 1985-89.
Lindsey, a self-described “stay-at-home mom” is involved in many activities at East Grand School because of her four children, who attend the school. She works as a substitute teacher, on the yearbook staff, with the freshman class and now as varsity basketball coach.
“As a coach, I hope to help the team become more successful and to help the athletes to set goals to achieve,” she said. “They have to work together and stick together. They have to learn to make decisions to help others and not just themselves. They will learn that hard work is rewarding.”
Lindsey has confidence in her players.
“They are a great bunch of girls with much talent,” she said. “I hope by the end of the year, others will see this in our student-athletes. Not only are they athletes, but they are very bright young ladies.”
