FLORIDA and PRESQUE ISLE – Elizabeth Giberson Coffey, 90, passed away on December 2, 2010, in Zephyrhills, Florida.
Betty, as she was known to family and friends, was born on October 23, 1920, in Castle Hill, Maine. She graduated from Presque Isle High School, then married her lifelong partner, Glendon E. Coffey on December 24, 1940, achieving nearly seventy years of married life. Among her accomplishments, besides family, was her commitment to a strong work ethic, having retired from the University of Maine Presque Isle following 17 years of service. Also, she was devoted to her beloved church. She was a member of the Zephyrhills United Methodist Church for the past 16 years, prior to which she was a member of the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church in Waterville, Maine, with her home church, the Grant Memorial Methodist Church in Presque Isle.
Mrs. Coffey’s legacy could best be described as always having a smile for everyone, including strangers. She enjoyed helping people, having worked as a volunteer for HPH hospice for several years during her active retirement.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother with a charitable spirit. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her presence in this world made it a better place for all of us.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara.
She is survived by her husband; a son, G. William Coffey; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Betty Coffey will be held at First United Methodist Church in Zephyrhills, on Friday, December 10, at noon.
