UMFK to offer regional EMS training

The Aroostook Region 5 Emergency Medical Services Training Center has recently announced that it has reached a tentative agreement with the University of Maine at Fort Kent, to provide annual on-campus EMS programs at the Firt Responder and Basic EMT levels, beginning in January of 2011.

Steve Corbin, program director for Aroostook EMS explained that this new collaboration will enhance several of UMFK’s traditional programs such as public safety, nursing and various wilderness occupational studies currently offered by the college.

“We are very excited at this opportunity to reach rural areas of Aroostook County, and to broaden our recruitment efforts to entice students into the EMS field” said Corbin. He added that this new venture with UMFK will certainly enhance their programs, as well as the ability for students to receive college credit for their time in these courses.

Successful students will have the opportunity to take the National Registry of EMT Exam and apply for state licensure.

“Our faculty team consists of certified Maine EMS instructor coordinators and our training facilities include classrooms in Houlton, Caribou, Frenchville and the University of Maine in Fort Kent,” said Corbin. “With a proven track record of success, the training center is also poised to conduct ongoing continuing education for EMTs and paramedics throughout the Aroostook, and northern Penobscot and Washington counties. Many of these programs are available at no cost to the staff of outlying ambulance services within our region,” he added.
