Group learns energy-saving tips
PRESQUE ISLE — The monthly meeting of Probus Club of Central Aroostook was held on Thursday, Nov.18, at Northern Maine Community College with 18 members present.
Karen Sweeney called the meeting to order. She turned the meeting over to Mel Fitzherbert, program chairman, who introduced Nancy Chandler from Maine Public Service Company who spoke about the many ways individuals can conserve energy and save on electricity bills.
Chandler spoke about the importance of sealing the cracks around windows and doors, insulating attics and other areas where the cold can come into the home and wrapping water heaters and pipes.
With her slide presentation she showed how to read the outside electric meter. Chandler also talked about conserving energy by putting computers on standby, turning off the power source on the TV at night and the importance of using LED Christmas lights.
At the close of her presentation, Chandler passed out energy kits to the members with an electric usage monitor to determine which appliances are costing the most to use.
Sweeney then turned the meeting to Pearl Carmichael who read a poem entitled “I Ain’t Dead Yet,” which got some chuckles. Sweeney said that get-well cards had been sent to two of the members who were not feeling well.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved.
The next Probus meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 16, at 10:30 a.m. Dan Ladner will be on hand to play Christmas music and lunch will be served at 11:30 am in the cafeteria.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned.
