UMPI women fall to MMA

CASTINE — Junior Sam Goda scored 18 points and collected eight rebounds to lead Maine Maritime Academy to a 93-53 victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle in both teams’ regular-season opener Monday.
Maggie Smith and Brittany Hunt scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, for the winners.
Rashell Saucier, a freshman from Washburn, paced the Owls with 13 points and six rebounds. Megan Korhonen, a senior from Littleton, had 12 points and six rebounds while Taylor-Jo Quint, a junior from Hodgdon, added a game-high seven steals. Emily Pelletier, a sophomore from Fort Kent, knocked in two three-pointers and finished with eight points.

The Owls fell behind early, trailing by 21 points at intermission of the non-conference matchup.
UMPI makes the trip to Henniker, N.H. this weekend for  a tournament at New England College. The Owls meet up against the tourney hosts at 7 p.m. Friday before taking on Suffolk University Saturday at 1 p.m.

Owl men drop hoop opener

CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy erased a halftime deficit and recorded a 68-53 triumph over UM-Presque Isle in men’s basketball action Monday.
Paul Campbell had 18 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as Maine Maritime Academy won its season-opening contest.
Brad Trask, a sophomore from Easton, led the Owls with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Patrick Manifold, a sophomore from Great Yarmouth, United Kingdom, was solid with 11 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Gerardo Vasquez, a senior from Sarasota, Fla., scored 13 points and Clifford McDonald, a senior from Sarasota, Fla., pulled down 13 rebounds. Michael Warner, a freshman from Norwich, United Kingdom, notched nine points.
UMPI, which connected on nine three-point field goals in the game, held a 22-21 lead at intermission before the Mariners exploded for 47 second-half points.
The Owls return to the court Saturday and Sunday as they compete in a tourney at East Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Ct. UMPI takes on the tourney hosts on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and then play either Lasell College or Tufts University Sunday afternoon.

Women’s soccer team blanked in Sunrise final

SCARBOROUGH – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Lady Owls were defeated by the Bengals of the University of Maine at Fort Kent 2-0 on Saturday in the Sunrise Conference championship soccer game held at the Clifford Mitchell Sports Complex.
With the loss, the Owls finish the season at 12-4, while the Bengals moved to 19-2 and received an automatic bid into the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship.
In Saturday’s final, Victoria Dubois-Iredale scored in the 40th minute on a direct kick from 20 yards out beating UM-Presque Isle keeper Taylor Ussery of La Verne, Calif. on a well-placed ball.
Sunrise Conference Offensive Player of the Year Whitney Sinclair added an insurance goal in the 68th minute as Dubois-Iredale chipped a ball over the Owl defense to Sinclair, who scored her fourth goal of the tournament.
The Bengals outshot UMPI in the contest, 29-6.
On Friday, the Owls earned defeated the Clippers of UM-Machias, 1-0, in the semifinals. Sophomore Lainey Herring of Houlton tallied the game’s only goal.

Owl soccer team drops semifinal match

SCARBOROUGH – The Owl men’s soccer team fell by a 1-0 score to UM-Machias in Friday’s semifinal round of the Sunrise Conference tourney. The game was scoreless after regulation and overtime and was decided on penalty kicks.

Conference awards handed out to 6 Owl players

SCARBOROUGH – Four members of the University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s soccer team and two members of the UMPI men’s team were named to the Sunrise Conference all-conference team during a banquet Friday.
Brooke Long, a freshman back from Mannheim, Germany, who played in high school at Presque Isle, was named rookie of the year and joined Desiree Smith, a junior forward from Thomaston; Chelsea Boudreau, a senior midfielder from Wallace, Nova Scotia; and Taylor Ussery, a sophomore goalkeeper from La Verne, Calif. on the elite squad
Making the men’s all-conference team were twin brothers and seniors Devon and Josh Peaslee of Woolwich. Devon made the team as a forward and Josh as a midfielder.
