PRESQUE ISLE — Officials with the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce are making their list and checking it twice in preparation for the 21st annual Holiday Light Parade, scheduled to take place on Saturday, Dec. 4.
“Lineup for the event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on North Street at the east end of the parking lot. The parade will begin at 7 p.m. and head south, ending at the University of Maine at Presque Isle,” said Theresa Fowler, executive director, PIACC.

Judging of the entries for the different categories will take place at the beginning of the event, as entrants line prepare to line up on North Street. This will give participants an opportunity to show off their trophies as they make their way through downtown.
The event has grown in popularity over the years, both with spectators and area businesses.
“Over the years, the parade has gained in popularity not only with area merchants but with those who turn out to view it as well. The number of participants and spectators increases with each season,” Fowler said.
Fowler said organizers are always looking for ways to make the activity bigger and better each year.
“To add another dimension to the holiday experience, we are, once again, looking for participants to add music to their floats to make this year’s parade the best ever. Categories will include: Parade Champion, Business, Non-Profit, Faith-Based and General,” she said.
As in past years, the Chamber’s float will once again have the only Santa Claus.
“Any extra Santas or throwing of candy will disqualify your entry. We appreciate participants’ cooperation with this. If you’d like to give out candy, please have walkers pass it out to the children,” said Fowler, noting the importance of limiting the number of Santas to prevent confusion amongst children along the parade route. “As for the candy, it’s a safety factor. Handing it out will prevent children from darting in front of floats or people getting hit by candy.”
In addition, participants are asked to shut off their headlights during the parade.
“Catholic Charities of Maine will be providing the only food collection float,” said Fowler. “Please come prepared to share during this Christmas season.”
Children’s books will also be distributed during the event.
After the parade, hot chocolate and holiday cookies will be served at Gentile Hall.
“Over the years, this parade has gained enormous popularity. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your business or organization and join in the fun,” said Fowler.
