Gray – Alice Marie Holmquist, 85, of Gray, passed away peacefully with family by her side at Coastal Manor on November 10, 2010, after a hard fought battle with cancer and congestive heart failure.
Alice was born in St. Leonard, New Brunswick, Canada on April 27, 1925. Alice was the daughter of the late Valerie and Mary Anne Boudreau. Alice was educated in St. Leonard. On June 25, 1947, she married Fred W. Holmquist. The two of them spent a wonderful 62 years together until Fred’s passing last fall.
After marrying, Alice and Fred moved to Aroostook County, Maine where they worked together farming potatoes and it was there that they started their family. Alice enjoyed telling stories of her time spent working on the farm, her adventures driving trucks in the fields, and the challenges of raising a family in northern Maine.
In 1958, Alice and Fred moved their family to Portland, Maine, then to North Yarmouth, and finally to Gray in 1976. Alice and Fred were able to build the house that they always dreamed of, and she took great pride in decorating the interior with many items she crafted herself.
Alice was a self-taught artist, a talent she discovered later in life. Her house was always full of her beautiful paintings and sketches and she always had a new project in progress. This was an activity she continued until just days before her death.
Alice will be sadly missed by all her friends and family, especially her son, Danny and his wife, Linda and their children, Danny II, Nick and Lisa; son, Dwight and his wife, Alice, their children Benjamin, Jeremy, Sam, Caleb and Katie; son, Peter and his wife, Lori, their children, Jennifer, Jason and Jocelyn; her great-grandchildren, Brandon, Megan, Zachary, Brett, Tyler, Jacob, Matthew and Ashley; and her sisters, Claire and Dorilda.
Alice’s children invite family and friends to a gathering to celebrate her life at 77 Egypt Road, on Saturday, November 20, at noon.
