Calendar depicts city’s military heritage
PRESQUE ISLE — The Presque Isle Historical Society has dedicated its 2011 calendar to the Star City’s extensive military background, with images reflecting the impact war has had on the community, dating back to World War II.
“The 6th annual historic calendar from the Presque Isle Historical Society is now available. The 2011 calendar features 20 photographs that chronicle the impact World War II had on Presque Isle, especially with the Army Air Base here,” said Kim Smith, treasurer/corresponding secretary of the organization.
Each month reflects historic data from the era and how the community did their part in support of the U.S. armed forces.
“Noted on each month are Star-Herald headlines from the early ‘40s that show when Presque Isle citizens helped in the war effort through blackouts, rationing, purchase of war bonds and scrap metal drives,” Smith said.
These one-of-a-kind collector items can be purchased at local businesses and would make a great Christmas gift.
“This unique calendar is available at Merchants on the Corner or Dr. Richard Graves’ Main Street office for only $10. To order by mail, send $12 to the Presque Isle Historical Society, PO Box 285, Presque Isle, ME 04769,” said Smith.
Proceeds from the calendar will go to the Historic Fire Station Restoration Project.
