To the editor:
Years ago, late 1930s, I used to go to the Temple Theatre in Market Square to watch the Saturday afternoon movies (often the Lone Ranger, etc.). Before the movie started RKO Pathe News was on for a few minutes. One news segment featured the popular mayor of NYC — LaGuardia — who mentioned “with Patience and Fortitude, things will come your way.” I never forgot his statement.
It was with great interest, therefore, when I was reading a Cary Library novel “Don’t Blink” by James Patterson in 2010 that on page 63 I read “ … on the steps outside the New York Public Library — smack between its two landmark lion sculptures, Patience and Fortitude — when, etc …”.
It’s my belief LaGuardia was referring to these two sculptures when he used the phrase I never forgot.
