On Saturday, the state individual golf championship was held on the Arrowhead Course, par 72, at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.
“The course was soggy with more than two inches of rain falling the day before,” said Houlton coach Marty Gervais. “That made for plugged balls and fat shots a common sight throughout the day.”
Gervais also noted that the temperature was in the 50s, with 30 mile an hour winds.
“It was a mental round of who wanted it most,” he added.

Houlton’s Ian Gervais finished second in Class C with a 75, just two strokes behind Madison’s Seth Sweet.
“Ian started with back-to-back bogies on his starting holes, but then settled in playing the next 16 holes one over par,” said Gervais, Ian’s father and coach. “Ian had a one-shot lead with two holes to play, but Seth Sweet finished strong with a birdie on the last hole. Ian’s last hole was the par 3 10th hole. He hit the green, but spun his ball back and it rolled down an embankment. He was unable to get up and down from there and had to settle for a bogey.”
According to Gervais, his son said, “With a break or two throughout the day, I could have shot par golf.”
“Seth is a good friend, a great golfer and a true competitor,” said Gervais. “I give him a lot of credit.”
